Gray skies hung above us, and the smell of saltwater filled my nose. A white and black striped lighthouse loamed above us while waves lapped at a thin strip of sand below us. We stood at the top of a small path that lead down to a thin strip of sand, where a little blonde head boy of about 4 or 3 raced up and down that sandy strip, while I red-headed woman in a long blue dress and oversized wide brim hat watched him.
The woman turned back to look at us and smiled, before turning her attention back towards the little boy. In that brief moment, I caught a glimpse of her face. She had an upturned nose and a sprinkling of freckles across her face, and two blue sparkling eyes.
"This is my first Somnium Memoriae and the only one I didn't make myself." he raised his hand and pointed down at the mother and the little child. "That's me and my mom down there. This is the last gift she ever gave to me. She took this memory from my dad, I guess he was watching us from up here. She was going away on a long trip, and she wanted me to have something to help me when I missed her."
"Your mother died when you were young right?"
I remembered Maureen's lesson she had taught about the Alpha and his family. Alpha Luka and his mate, Clair, had one son, Grayson, together. Then, one full moon night in the dead of winter, she took a shortcut across the lake the ice broke beneath her feet and she fell in. She never came back up.
"Yeah," Grayson said softly.
Mine did too, and if what Liam said was true. She died for me. But I can't tell you because of this stupid binding spell.
Grayson's younger version stopped at the edge of the water and bent down and began to slap his hands against the water. Abruptly, a wave swelled from the ocean and knocked him over.
"Grayson!!!" I voice cried and the next second, another little boy around 4 or 3, with dark shaggy hair and bright blue swimming trunks, blinked into existence and flew past us down the path and raced towards Grayson.
By the time he reached him, Grayson's mom had gone to him and was helping him to his feet.
"Are you okay!?" the little boy asked and threw his arms around the young Grayson.
"Liam!" a woman yelled and the little boy's face jerked up towards us and I saw he had bright green eyes.
Then a petite woman with brown hair blinked into existence beside us and hurried after the boy. She also had on a long dress on, but hers' was white. Her dark hair hid her face from me, but while she hobbled somewhat clumsily down to the water, a gentle breeze came in from the ocean and pressed the white fabric against her body. And at that moment, I saw she was pregnant.
My eyes lingered on her belly.
"Grayson?" I asked softly while I stared intently at the brunette woman making her way towards the trio by the waves, and grab the dark-haired little boy's arm, and began to scold him. "Is that the same Liam of the Red Moon pack?"
"Yeah, that's how I know we can trust him, we go way back. My mother was originally from the Red Moon pack, and she was best friends with Alpha Jack's mate...I think her name was. Helen. I barely remember her. That's who the lady with the brown hair is. We used to vacation with them but stopped once my mom had her accident. I remember my mom drilling it into me that I couldn't talk about these trips because your existence isn't supposed to be known by those outside your family until...you know."
"Anyways, I would come here over and over as a kid and watch my mom and me. It was because I missed her and this place was my escape because I didn't leave Pine Ridge again until four years when I turned eight. My dad kept me locked in the house, which made me nuts because I hated being inside. I even made up an imagery Liam to play with. I even made him age as the years went on. And when I finally saw him again when he was eight, he looked exactly like how I had imagined him."
I continued to stare at the woman, only paying attention to the dark-haired woman that kept her back to me.
My mother, I was seeing my mother!
"Can we go down there?" I asked and pointed to the people down below us.
"No, unfortunately, this Somnium Memoriae is not as well made as mine. We can't go down there. Because my dad never did."
All a sudden the air around us began to shimmer and I watched in confusion as the scene below changed back to little Grayson running up and down the beach, while his mom looked on. Grayson's mom turned back to look at us and smiled, before turning back towards her child.
Grayson sighed. "See not as well made, it's on a loop and you can't interact with anyone."
I felt disappointed. I would have loved to have gone down there and stood next to my mother. Seen her face. Touched her. Thanked her for loving me so much that she had given up her life. But even seeing her like this, left me with an overwhelming sense of happiness.
That was me inside her stomach. Grayson was 21 if I remembered correctly, so she would have been pregnant with me around this time.
"And that's why, I want to come back here and make a new one, but this time with another woman I love," Grayson grabbed my shoulder and turned me towards him."
My heart began to hammer in my chest, while my brain processed what I was about to do. What I had wanted to do the second our eyes had locked, even though I had denied it, tried to fight it.
"We may never get to do that," I said and turned away from him.
Grayson closed his eyes and let go of me and took a step back. He pressed his thumb and his index finger to his temple.
"Yeah," Grayson said and I could hear an underlying current of anger in his voice, "but could you for one second pretend that wasn't the case. And not have..."
"So, let's make one now. And do something we may never get to do in the real world. Is there anywhere else we can go in here that's not in view of the beach?" I asked.
Grayson's head jerked up and he looked at me "Yeah the lighthouse..."
"Good, because I don't want to do this in front of your mother." I turned and my eyes landed on a door at the I walked towards it
I yanked it open and turned towards Grayson who was right behind me. I took a backward step inside the cool cement building, and pulled my blue sweatshirt over my head, and let it fall to the floor until I was standing in front of him in just my bra.
His eyes blazed yellow, "Are you sure?" he asked.
I replied with a kiss, and backed away from him with a grin. "Yes, but you have to catch me first," I said and turned and raced up the spiral staircase behind me.
