———————————————————-Liam stepped forward and took the letter from his hand.
He eyed it suspiciously, while he tore its envelope open, "I know most of the daywalkers in Sanda's colony, and I don't recognize you," he said while his eyes scanned the sprawling cursive letters.
I attempted to look over his shoulder to read what the letter contained, but he shifted the paper out of my view.
"This is her handwriting," he looked up at Aaron. "Show me your brand."
Aaron nodded and rolled the sleeve of his left arm exposing a circle with a hand at its center, holding an eye between its pointer and middle finger.
Liam leaned in close to me, studied for a second then nodded.
"Someone gave me as a gift to her recently. That's why you might not know my name," Aaron explained.
He was given as a gift? I felt a twinge of sympathy for Aaron.
I knew a little about vampires and daywalkers from the lessons that Maureen taught us. Vampires treated daywalkers much like the werewolves treated the Luneras maybe a little worse even. Daywalkers belonged to vampire masters, and those that didn't belong to one were often hunted down by other vampires and black practitioners of magic. Other vampires hunted them for sport and to keep the daywalkers under control, so they didn't become vampires and challenge their power. Daywalker blood and bones were also major ingredients in black magic spells.
Aaron pulled his sleeve down so that his arm was once again covered.
"Lucky you, Sanda is probably the best master you can hope for."Liam held out his hand. "Welcome to the team." Aaron grabbed it and they both shook hands
Liam turned his attention back to the letter and his lips moved silently while he read it. And the more he read, the more worried his face seemed to grow.
When he finally looked up, from the paper his face was pale and his eyes were wide, "If this is what has been occurring at Red Crescent, why have the spirits not informed me that this was happening!?"
"I don't know much about these spirits, but maybe this was their way of telling you?"Aaron replied with a shrug.
"Or they wanted me to focus on my current tasks." Liam's green eyes shifted to me. "Everlee, did being here trigger your memories at all?"
"Yeah. Stepping back inside this house made almost everything come rushing back in. Memories of you. Ian. Mom and dad. Our live together at Red Crescent."
Liam's entire face lit up with a grin and he reached out for me and wrapped me in a tight hug. "Welcome back, little sister!" he said and planted a kiss on top of my head.
I nodded my head against his chest, a smile of my own spreading across my face.
Good or bad, I'm glad I remembered our life together before our family was ripped apart."
"So do you remember what happened down there in that hole?"
I pulled away from our embrace and Liam let me go. "No," I replied. "But I think if you took me to were He lives, in Red Crescent. That might trigger the rest of my memories."
"Is there a reason that these memories are so important for her to remember?" Aaron asked. His icy blue eyes shifted between me and my brother.
"Yes, she is the only Lunera that has been sacrificed to the Dark One and has returned and might be the key to stopping him. I have no doubt that He is the evil force that Sanda mentioned she sensed in her letter."
"Do you maybe want to tell her the problem with going back to Red Crescent at this time?"
Liam turned to me and crumbled up the piece of paper and crammed it into the pockets of his jeans before looking back at me. "Sanda's colony lives very close to Red Crescent. She's a very close friend of mine. According to her letter, no one has heard anything from Red Crescent in a few days. So, she sent a couple of her Daywalkers to investigate, and they reported that there appears to be some kind of powerful magical barrier around Red Crescent. And she thinks that there is a possibility that I could break through it, but only if my powers are at their peak. Which means..." Liam trailed off and frowned.
"Which means that you have to find another mate," Aaron finished. "You as alpha and a magic practitioner are more powerful when you have a mate. Right?"
Liam cast his eyes down at his hands." I had a mate, she died. I don't want another one."
"Then good luck getting through that barrier. Sanda has not been my master that long, but I have come to learn she is rarely wrong. If she says you need to claim a mate, then you need to claim a mate. Now if you would excite me, I need to go check on my sister. She's still waiting in the car for me. I will be back."
Aaron brushed past us and out the front door. He let the door swing shut behind him, leaving me and Liam along in the dimly lit hallway.
"There is someone who I could make into my mate, someone I just met recently," Liam said softly. "The pull is not nearly as strong as it was with Laurie, not even close. But I have a feeling I might have to claim her and make her my mate in order to save our pack."
My eyes drifted to the pocket where the note from Sanda was housed. I had a feeling that Liam wasn't sharing everything that was contained in that note for whatever reason. I wondered if I should confront him about it right now or not."
"Who is this person that you can claim to be your mate?" I asked instead.
"A human girl," he replied.
