I raised my eyebrows. "A human?"
Liam nodded his head slowly and leaned his back against one of the hallway's white walls.
Having a human mate was actually not unheard of in the werewolf community, not exactly welcomed, but not as shameful as having a Lunera child. That was because, unlike Lunera, most of the time a human, if bitten, gained the Moon Goddess's blessing to changed under the full moon.
"Are you going to make this human your mate?"
Liam casted his green eyes down at his shoes. "I don't know. Even though our time together was so short, I still love Laurie..." he knitted his eyebrows together. "Can we not talk about this right now?" he asked.
I placed a hand on his shoulder. "Yeah of course," I replied and let my arm fall back against my side. A moment of silence stretched between us.
"Speaking of mates, I should probably figure out how I'm going to contact mine and let him know I'm alright," I said after a while.
"Call him," Liam replied
I let out a smaller, bitter laugh, "With what phone? You threw the one we had out the window!"
Liam reached into his other pant pocket, the one that did not contain the note and pulled out another phone, and handed it to me. While I stared down at it in awe.
"His phone number should be in there too. I brought a backup just in case. Although you probably aren't going to get any reception down here. You'll need to go up to the road if you want any to make a call."
I took it from him, just as Annie and Aaron stepped back through the front door. I slipped it into the pocket of my pants. Its metal shell felt cold against my hip, even though the fabric barrier my jeans provided.
Annie still looked a bit dazed, but clarity seemed to be slowly pooling back in her blue eyes. They stopped directly in front of us.
Aaron's eyes shifted between me and Liam. "You know the area?" he asked.
"I do, this is my family's vacation house we used to come to all the time when we were children."
"Is there any places around here you can eat or get food? Annie is hungry. We have been too busy following you to stop and eat an actual meal."
As if on cue, my stomach grumbled.
"I and Everlee are also hungry," we've hadn't had really anything to eat. There is a town about ten miles down the road. There is a grocery store and a small dinner there. If that's what you were looking for."
Aaron reached into his pocket and pulled out a black card and handed it to Annie, along with a pair of car keys.
"Here go get yourself something to eat," he said. "And bring back whatever groceries you need."
Annie craned her neck to look at her brother and her eyes narrowed. "Aren't you coming with us?"
Aaron shook his head, "I need to sleep, I've been driving all night."
"Don't you need to eat something too?"
He nodded his head absently. "I need sleep more. Mind picking me up a burger, extra rare?"
"I thought you were a vegetarian?"
"Not anymore..."
Annie was silent. Something flashed behind her eyes, but it was gone before I could register what it was. She looked towards us.
"You ready to go?" she asked.
"Yes," Liam replied and smiled at her.
Annie returned his smile with a look of apprehension
"I'm ready too," I said and offered her a smile, one that she returned.
We all drifted out of the house through the wooden front door into the warm sunlight, that reflected off the patches of snow and ice that populated the sparse landscape. Out front, the red convertible sat waiting for us, glistening in the sun.
Annie climbed into the driver's side and Liam speeded up before I could reach the car.
"I call shotgun!" he yelled and slid into the passenger seat.
Much to my annoyance and Annie's displeasure.
I climbed into the backseat and Annie started the car. I was pleased to find the inside of the car was warm.
The car's dashboard blinked to life and I saw that it read 11:00 am. How long had I been alone in that house for? Dawn was just breaking before I had broken in through the basement window.
We began to drive up the steep dirt road before us.
"So what is what really going on? Why did you two come all the way out to your family vacation home? The place looks like it hasn't been lived in for years, and it's freezing inside. And why was my brother so hell-bent on finding you."
"How about I'll tell you what I can when we get to the dinner and grab a booth?"
"Why not now?" Annie replied.
"Because it'll give us something to talk about, while Everlee makes a call to her boyfriend in the car."
"Yeah sure... I didn't even know she had one. But I guess I didn't know a lot of things."
"Is that okay with you Everlee?" he asked.
Boyfriend? It was weird hearing someone call Grayson my boyfriend.
"Yeah," I replied and suddenly I wanted to be at this dinner right now, so I could call Grayson. He sounded so upset and worried the last time I had talked to him.
Up ahead, I could see Richards's green truck. Up until now, I had completely displaced it from my mind. It was still sandwiched up against a gnarled tree.
Liam turned back to look at me over the headrest, "We'll have to check it out to see if the truck is still functioning."
I winced. "Yeah hope so."
"Turn right when you get up here, and keep going straight."
We reached the road and spent the rest of the car ride in silence. Until we reached a small dinner on the side of the road. Even though there appeared to be nothing else around it, the dirt parking lot beside it was jammed packed with cares. It closely resembled Al's Dinner, except its color scheme appeared to be black, white, and red instead of white and mint-green.
Annie parked the car and they both got out. Annie closed her door and began walking towards the front door of the dinner.
Liam looked back at me before shutting his door. "Meet us inside when you are done?" he asked.
"Yeah," I replied.
"Just be careful what you say...."
I bobbed my head in agreement and he swung his door closed.
I took out the phone from my pocket, scrolled to contacts, and quickly found Grayson's name and selected it. I lifted the phone and held it to my ear, while I waited for the call to connect.
