In the distance, I heard the sound of a car door slamming, and the relieved voices of Annie and Liam as they reunited with each other.
"Do you know who Hecate is?" she asked me, and tilted her head to the side while she waited for a reply. Her long hair fell over her shoulder in long, silky brown waves.
" A character in Macbeth," I replied without thinking, mainly because my thoughts right now were preoccupied with how much pain I was in at the moment. Even just lying here unmoving was excruciating.
Rossi let out a small, musical laugh, "I suppose that Shakespeare did borrow her likeness for one of his silly plays. But no child, she is the Goddess of boundaries, crossroads, witchcraft, and ghosts, but most importantly she is one of His enemies. We must call upon her, to ready you for what is to come. Although the price will certainly be steep, Hecate rarely offers her services for free."
I furrowed my brows at her. Whoever this Hectate person was, it didn't sound like I wanted to have anything to do with her. What if I couldn't pay Hectate's price.
Her eyes peered intently at me from behind her sunglasses. "The spell I just cast was meant to test you, to see if you could survive. And you failed, both you and your brother. Hectate is the only chance now. But we will wait to summon her, while you heal."
"Who are you?" I asked her, while she bent down to kneel beside me.
How did she know who He was and what I was like where He lived? Because somehow, I knew that the darkness she created, was almost exactly like the place where He lived.
"Rossi, a friend, and a fellow witch," she replied in her same heavy Italian accent. "Now sit still, you've gravely injured yourself, and need healing," she placed her fingers about a my burnt, raw flesh, and the second she did all the pain seemed to evaporate as what felt like cold river rushed over me.
"You are not my friend.Who are you really, how do you know about Him?" I asked, unable to contain myself anymore .
"Because I know many things, your brother isn't the only one that the spirits talk to..."
The happy noises of Liam and Annie's reunion were dying down, and now they were being replaced by Annie's call for her brother, Aaron. And by the sounds of things, he wasn't responding back.
And come to think of it, I wondered whether Grayson and the griffin were. I was very surprised that they hadn't come storming over to us the second the black fog had lifted. It made me very uneasy, especially since Grayson had been so royally p**ssed at me for shooting him in the foot, which he had totally deserved in my opinion.
But despite what he had just done, I still wondered if Grayson was okay... Surely Rossi wouldn't have hurt him. They were allies...right?
"It must no seem like I am your friend," the witch said, "but I assure you that I am. You can trust me because I knew your mother, Hellen. since she was a little girl. She came to live with me for a time before she turned eight and her wolf appeared and she went back to her family. I saw her once again years later when you were born and she came to me for help with you.."
Her words sent waves of confusion through me, which must of been evident on my face because she continued.
"Your mother was a natural-born witch, which is very rare in races outside the human one. She was so powerful that her own family couldn't handle her. Especially during the eight-year isolation that the Lichens, or werewolves like you like to call yourselves, lived under in their first eight years. So they sent her to me in order for me to help manage her power. And she came to me when she had you because you too were a natural-born witch. And because you are a natural-born witch and a Lunera, you might be the only thing that can stop Him."
