I couldn't describe what I saw in Laurie's light before it scuttled back into the darkness at its edge and perhaps it was better not to. No sane mind should be cursed with the image of that thing. Of what HE looked like.

"You swallowed it, good." She nodded her head in approval.

"What was that?" I asked and pointed at the darkness.

"I'm not sure, I'm not sure even the gods know. It's a thing that came here long ago, and laid dominate in the earth, while it festered in the darkness. It called out to many, but not many heard it until your father came along. He was the one that heard it's voice the loudest. He is the one that gave it the most sacrifice. He's the one that made it so strong."

"But why did he do that?" I asked.

"I don't have an answer for that either, unfortunately," Laurie dragged me forward and a rope appeared before me she bent down and quickly tied the end of it around my waste. "But if I had to guess, it was because he was afraid. Fear makes us do stupid things."

"Hold onto this, we are getting you out of here." Laurie took something out of her pocket and handed it to me. She laid her hands on top of mine and closed my fingers around a cylindrical object, before clicking it on. A light shown from its top and I realized it was a flash light. "Keep this pointed at you. It can't get you as long as you are are lit up. It can't stand the light."

Then she reached up to a section of rope above me head and gave it a firm tug. The next think I knew, I was being lifted of the ground. I looked down to see Laurie and her lantern were slowly growing smaller below me.

"I'll send the rope back down to you," I called out. I didn't know who was on the other side of the rope pulling me up, but surely they could pull Laurie up top. I could help them.

Laurie's eyes filled with tears. "I'm afraid this is as far as I go. It's all up to you Aurelia."

"What do you mean and my name is not Aurelia, it's Everlee!"

"It will be in the future."

"NO!" the single voice roared and its voice sounded like it was coming to my right and behind me at the same time."

"Sttoppp her, stttoppw her!"! a chorus of voices whispered in response.

The darkness around Laurie's light began to writhe and pulsate. I watched while blacken hands reach into the light surrounding Laurie, only to be burned one by one.

Then a hand reached out and grabbed onto Lauries ankle. She fell and the her lantern smashed on the ground and the next second, it went out.

She screamed and I took my flashlight and shown it down on her, only to see that at least a dozen blacken hands were grabbing onto her.

They quickly retreated in my light.

"Laurie turned her face up to me, her blue eyes  wide.

"No!" she cried. Do not take the light off yourself!

"But..." I began and I felt the wet hair began to wrap around my arms.

"They need you Aurelia! Trust me."

My hands trembled while I turned the light back onto myself while far below me Laurie screamed out in terror.
