The door bell rings and I hear voices from downstairs.
"Yosalyn! Come in! Hey, little buddy!" Jordan's voice echoes.
"I'll introduce you to my daughter. Jesy!"
I hear my mom shout.I put Mary Anne down on the floor and head downstairs.
"Hi." I say.
A short middle aged woman with light eyes, black hair and a long red dress is seated on the sofa. Beside her, is a boy around Ara and Azima's age, who looks extremely scared. He has brown hair and a light tan.
"Jesy, this is my colleague, Yosalyn. Yosalyn, this is my daughter Jesy." Mom says.
Yosalyn waves at me. "Hi, I'm really sorry about this late notice, but Chris and I are going out for dinner tonight and we need someone to look after our little Brian while we're gone. I hope it's not too much trouble." She says in a thick spanish accent.
"Oh, don't worry about it dear, Jesy was more than happy to do it. And besides, you and I are so close, feel free to drop him off whenever he needs to be watched over." My mom says.
Yosalyn looks relieved, she smiles. "Thank you. I'm sure Brian will love it."
"Brian, say 'hi'."
The little boy looks down and says a barely audible 'Hi.'
"He's shy. Once he opens up, He won't stop talking." Yosalyn comments.
"Can I offer you anything before you leave?" Jordan asks.
Yosalyn shakes her head, smiling. "No, thank you. I should get going now. Chris is waiting for me in the car. Oh, and Jesy,-" She says, getting up from the sofa and turning to me.
"I'm sure you guys will be fine, but here is my number in case you need me." She hands me a piece of paper with a number written on it.
"Thanks." I say.
"Brian, be good okay? Don't give Jesy a hard time. We can have ice cream after I get back, if you're a good boy, okay Papi?"
Brian looks up at her and solemnly, blushing profusely and nods his head.
After my parents and Yosalyn leave, I'm left standing in the living room with Brian.
"Hey, Brian." I say softly, walking towards him. He is sitting on the sofa, hands clutched in his lap, looking at me.
"I'm Jesy, and guess what? I don't like introductions either. I don't have too many friends."
"I can be your friend." He says quietly.
I smile at him. "I'd like that very much. You know why? I don't make friends with too many people, but I do with special people. And you're a very special boy."
He smiles back tentatively.
"Do you like cookies?" I ask.
He nods his head.
"Oh yeah, Which kind?"
"Chocolate chip!" He says, happily.
I laugh. "I have three sisters who love chocolate chip cookies. And they love making new friends. Do you want to bake cookies with them? I can introduce you guys."
He pauses for a minute. Then, he gets up and says excitedly, "What are we waiting for? Let's go!"
I laugh and grab his hand.
"They're upstairs, playing with their dolls. Come on, you'll love them."
"Azima, Ara and Sarah, can I introduce you to my new friend?" I say.
They nod excitedly. I nudge Brian away from my legs.
"Guys, this is my new friend Brian. He wants to be your friend too. Be nice to him, okay?"
"Of course! We wouldn't hurt any friend of Jesy's." Azima says.
I smile. "Do you guys want to help me bake chocolate chip cookies?"
The girls jump up and down in excitement.
I take Sarah in my arms and ask the rest to follow me as we head downstairs towards the kitchen.
"Ara, can you pass me the spoon, please?" Brian asks.
We've been baking for the past one hour now and Sarah has cookie batter on her nose, Brian has opened up a bit more, he's started talking to the twins and Sarah.
"When can we put the cookies in the oven?" Brain asks.
"Right after we cut the batter into cookie shapes with the cookie cutter." I say.
"Alright, Ara and Brian, can you guys gently pour the batter out onto this tray for me?" I say.
Ara nods and takes the bowl in her hands as Brian takes the batter out with a spoon. I take my phone out and watch the last part of the youtube tutorial.
"Now, use cookie cutters to cut the batter. Once you have them all cut out, sprinkle some chocolate chips and put it in the oven for 8- 10 minutes on preheat mode at 350 degrees."
Once the video is over, Ara and Brian finish taking out all the batter from the bowl.
"Great. So, now, Sarah, and Azima, you guys can cut the shapes. But do it very carefully."
I wipe the flour from my cheek and take out the cookie cutters from the cabinet behind me. Wow, this kitchen is a mess.
"Which shapes do you want your cookies in?" I ask.
"Minnie mouse!" Sarah says.
"A Dinosaur!" Brian shouts enthusiastically.
"A star!" Ara says.
"A heart!" Azima says.
I laugh. "Sarah, Brian, sorry but we don't have those cutters. But here's what we'll do, we can craft our own Minnie mouse and dinosaur shapes. There is some frosting cream we can use to decorate it to make it look like Minnie mouse and a dinosaur. Sounds good?"
Sarah face brightens up. and she nods enthusiastically. "Then, can I draw the dinosaur?" Brian asks.
"Of course. Ara, Azima, don't worry, we have star and heart shaped cookie cutters."
I put the star shaped cookie cutter over the dough and take Ara's hand. Then I press it over the dough firmly.
"Ooh, pretty." She says.
"Azima, your turn. Give me your hand please."
After the stars and hearts have been cut, I cover it with yellow and red glitter.
"Alright, now will you guys help me make the dinosaur and Minnie Mouse?"
Brian jumps up. "Can the dinosaur be green?"
"We don't have green frosting. But we have yellow. Let's make a cool yellow one." I say, hoping he follows along.
His face falls but he shrugs and follows along, nonetheless.
About half an hour later, the kitchen looks like a cat fight took place, my hair looks like a rat's nest, the kids' clothes are covered in flour and glitter, and I feel exhausted.
The oven pings. "Yay! The cookies are done!!" Brian and Sarah have been sitting by the oven watching the cookies patiently.
I put on my oven mitten and take the cookie tray out of the oven. The cookies smell delicious.
Just then, the door bell rings. Before I can react, Brian is racing towards the door. He opens it and screams. When I see who is standing at the door, Brian is hugging someone's neck, laughing. The strangers' face is hidden, so I don't see his face immediately. But when I do, I gasp.
