"Once you've mounted your board, you can push yourself into the water, and try to keep your balance." Chad instructs us.
I mount my board perfectly, just like he showed us, and push myself into the water.
I stumble at first and nearly fall into the water.
Erick steadies me before that can happen.
"Easy, sweetheart." Chad says.
Erick tenses.
The second time I try it, I fall.
Erick stretches his hand out and helps me up.
I huff and try again, this time, I manage to balance myself for a full ten seconds before falling into the water again.
I glance over at Erick who is having no trouble at all.
How is he doing it so easily?
He ventures further into the water and catches a medium sized waved expertly.
I gape at him in awe.
"How did you do that?" I ask him, amazed.
"I've ...surfed...before." He says, panting for air.
"When?" I ask, there's just so much I don't know about this guy.
"A few years ago." He replies vaguely.
"Want to try again, love?" Chad asks me.
I nod my head, feeling determined.
"I want to be as good, if not, better than Erick." I say.
Erick chuckles.
"Good luck with that." He says.
Now I feel even more determined to beat him.
I hop on the board and balance myself properly.
Once I'm confident enough, I venture a little further just like Chad taught us.
I'm a little rocky at first, but once I calm down and focus, I manage to catch a small wave.
I whoop with joy.
"I did it!!" I say proudly.
Erick grins.
"Good job! You want to catch a wave with me? I'll help you." He says, giving me a high five.
"Sure." I say, grinning back.
Together, we catch a couple of small waves and I soon start to feel tired.
"I'm done." I say, panting.
Erick looks equally tired.
"Me too. Let's go back to the shore." He says.
We walk to the shed and return the boards, though I still don't know why that board was so special.
Chad bids us goodbye and we walk back to our stuff.
Erick pulls out a towel form the bag and wraps it around me.
"Thanks." I whisper.
Goosebumps erupt all over my skin.
My teeth start to clatter.
Erick shakes his head, removing water from his dangled wet hair.
He looks so hot right now.
Damn.
He pulls out a bag of chips and spread out a few towels on the sand so that we can sit.
Once we've settled down, we sit in a comfortable silence, watching the sun set over the ocean's horizon.
