"Jessica! Brian! Oh, my gosh, are you kids alright??" Yossalyn asks, when she sees me.
I manage a nod and even a half smile.
Chad left a while back, once he was assured I'd be fine on my own.
"Mommy! What's happening? Why are we here? Why isn't Erick waking up?" Brian asks her.
She hugs him tightly.
"I wish I knew, Brian. I wish I could tell you." She says and I notice that her voice cracks as she speaks.
She sees a nurse coming out of his room and takes her aside and talks to her privately.
From here, it's hard to hear what the two are saying, but judging by Yossalyn's expression, I'm guessing the nurse told her exactly what she told me earlier about Erick's critical condition. She looks devastated.
She asks her a question, to which the nurse shakes her head and gives a reply.
Yossalyn walks back to me and hugs me tightly.
I'm taken aback by the gesture at first, but then I wrap my arms around her, realizing that she probably needs this more than I do.
"I'm so sorry, Yossalyn." I whisper, tears stinging my eye again.
"What if he doesn't survive, Jesy? What will we do? I don't think I can handle another loss in my life." She sobs into my shoulders.
She wipes her tears and pulls away.
"Lyn, how is he? Did you see him yet? Am I too late? What happened?" Chris asks urgently, walking in.
Concern and urgency are etched on his face.
He sees the tears streaming down our faces and he freezes.
"Oh Lord, It's bad. What exactly happened, Jessica?" He asks, his expression darkening.
I gulp.
I'm not scared of many things, but the look on Chris' face is probably high up on that list.
I have never seen Chris so angry, and let me tell you, it's a pretty scary sight.
He looks like he's ready to pulverize me any second just by the glare he was giving me.
I explain everything, starting with how we decided to go for a spin and then to the park right up till what Chad explained.
"I'm going to find out who did this to my step son, and he'll be sorry." Chris says darkly.
Any other day, I would have gushed at how sweet the gesture was, today, I feel exactly what Chris is feeling.
Devastated, and angry.
What kind of driver wasn't paying attention and put someone's life in danger, had the guts to flee the spot?
"Chris, he's not in even in a stable condition." Yossalyn says, trying to keep the worry out of her voice.
A look of worry dawns on him.
"He'll survive. He has to." Chris whispers, sounding edgy and distraught.
Just then, my cell phone rings.
I don't feel like answering, but I force myself to at least check who the caller is.
It's Jordan.
I immediately pick up.
"Jessica, please tell me you're okay." Is the first thing he says.
"I am, Jordan. I'm at the hospital. They're not letting anyone see him. We just got news from the nurse and she said that he won't be allowed visitors till Monday and that his condition is critical." I inform him.
