(Y/n) had always had an infatuation with Draco Malfoy. He'd never quite understood why, considering how Malfoy was, for all intents and purposes, a complete asshole. But something about Malfoy commanded (y/n)'s attention, even when he wished it weren't so.

(Y/n) had never spoken to Draco before, but on their first day of year five, Hagrid teamed them up to take the treasure from some Nifflers' pouches. Draco had whined when he wasn't paired with his friends and approached (y/n) with a scowl.

Timid (y/n) was, of course, a bit distressed by all of this. He kept his eyes on the Nifflers, but couldn't keep from watching Draco through the corner of his eye. Cooing over his Niffler, (y/n) finally got the courage to mumble, "All you've got to do is rub their bellies, and you can take whatever you want from their pouch."

Draco raised an eyebrow in his typical fashion. "You seriously pay attention to this class?"

(Y/n) shrugged. "I thought everyone knew that. But yeah, I guess I like this class better than some."

"Why would you? It's bloody boring."

Another shrug from (y/n). "I like animals. They don't judge like people do."

(Y/n)'s vague answer piqued Draco's interest, although he wouldn't dare admit it. "What do people judge you for, exactly?"

(Y/n) blushed with embarrassment. "A lot of things. Too many things."

Draco rolled his eyes. "Oh, c'mon. You're being dodgy, it makes it sound like you've got a secret."

(Y/n) chuckled. "I've got plenty of secrets."

"Why don't you tell me one?" Draco asked, wearing as charming a smile as he could muster.

"Why do you care?" blurted (y/n). "It's not like I'll matter to you after today anyway."

"I'm not heartless," Draco admitted.

(Y/n) raised a brow. "Yeah, okay," he said, unconvinced.

Draco thought for a moment; for once, he was unsure of how to respond to someone. He took in (y/n)'s scrutinizing (e/c) eyes, which were focused on Draco, and the messy flop of hair that tried to cover them.

Finally, (y/n) was the first to break the unofficial staring contest. "Whatever," he muttered, tickling his Niffler. He for one was very confused by what had just transpired between himself and the Slytherin Prince.

On the other hand, Draco had found himself a mystery to solve in the form of a nervous boy.

After asking around, Draco really didn't get much information, other than that (y/n) was a Ravenclaw, and even that had taken extensive questioning. He'd finally found a proper informant in Emily, a Hufflepuff.

"Why are you asking about him?" She had replied to his barrage of questions.

"I'm...just curious is all." Which wasn't a lie. But then, it wasn't the entire truth. Truthfully, Draco found it intriguing how he couldn't seem to read the Ravenclaw boy, and intended to know him if only to make him less unreadable.

"He's my best friend, and if you're trying to hurt him or anything I'll kick your ass into next year." This was big talk coming from a Hufflepuff, but then loyalty was one of their most valued traits and this girl seemed to possess by the droves.

"It's nothing like that. We have Care Of Magical Creatures together and, I don't know, he just seemed...closed off."

"He has his reasons," she said. "People -your people- haven't treated him kindly."
