(Y/n) had always felt like he'd been on his own, but it was a completely different feeling to truly be alone, to be separated from society. The young boy had been living in the Western Air Temple for a few weeks and scavenging food from the nearby forest; despite the solitude and simplicity of his current living situation, he'd never felt such peace.
One day, however, ended up turning his world upside-down yet again. He was sitting in one of the many hallways of the temple, having a simple meal of some nuts and lukewarm mint tea, when he heard footsteps. Who in the hell would be in this place? It's been abandoned for years!
(Y/n) ran down the hallway to hide in another room, leaving his food behind. I was looking forward to some good tea... he thought with dismay as he ducked into a room and, realizing there was nothing to hide behind and the strangers grew ever closer, huddled in a corner near the doorway and hoped not to be seen in the dark room.
His breath hitched when he saw a boy peak his head in, sweeping the room. "There's hardly anything in here!" he said, which made (y/n) think this boy had an accomplice.
"There's gotta be something," came another voice from the hallway, "because why else would there be a room?"
The boy in the doorway -with long brown hair and an outlandish mustache- stepped inside the room to take a better look at the place. He swept around, and his eyes landed on (y/n).
(Y/n) yelped in surprise. "Please don't hurt me!" he pleaded, because who was to say this mustachioed boy wasn't here to steal his supplies?
Instead, he just laughed. "Why would we hurt you?" He turned presumably to the other boy and said, "Teo, get in here! There's someone already living here."
"Really?" The other boy -Teo- entered the room, and (y/n) noticed he was in some kind of wheeled apparatus. (Y/n) realized that this boy probably was unable to walk, and felt embarrassed for thinking these guys would hurt him.
"What are you doing here?" (Y/n) asked suspiciously. "There's nothing here."
"We're trying to lay low for a while," explained Mustache Boy. "I'm Haru, by the way, and this is Teo."
Teo smiled and waved hello to (y/n). "I'm (y/n). What are you hiding from?"
"What are you hiding from?" Teo retorted. (Y/n) was surprised; he hadn't expected this boy to come back at him like that.
"My family," (y/n) answered honestly. "It's a long story, and you'll probably side with them anyway so I'll spare you the details. Just know that we had a falling-out."
"Well that sucks," supplied Haru. "You don't seem like a Fire Nation spy so I'll tell you we're hiding from them."
"Okay. Yeah, I'm not. I'm from Ba Sing Se."
"That must be a tough place to get out of with the walls and everything," Teo said.
(Y/n) shrugged. "I've read enough novels to know a thing or two about evading authorities and escaping from seemingly inescapable situations."
The boys laughed. "Well, you sound well-read," Haru noticed. "C'mon, we'll take you to meet the rest of the gang. You're in for a surprise."
"I'm not even going to ask."
"Good idea," Teo agreed. The boys took him out to the open space overlooking the canyon, where their other friends waited. (Y/n) took them all in: the young black-haired girl in earth kingdom attire; the boy with the ponytail and the girl with the hair loopies whom (y/n) assumed was his sister; and finally-
"Oh my gods," (y/n) breathed. "Is that-"
"The one and only Avatar!" announced the ponytail boy, throwing an arm around the small boy with the arrow tattoos.
