As the band played a jaunty tune, the tavern patrons clapped in time and watched the young boy dance across the bar. His (e/c) eyes gleamed as he performed such fanciful footwork the patrons wondered if he danced as a profession. How would they know this boy was their prince?

Almost every night the prince donned peasant garb and slipped a hat over his long (h/c) hair to revel with his people in the tavern -one of the seedier taverns of his kingdom's capital, actually, not that that bothered him- and enjoyed himself the way he never got to in his day life.

By day, he was a princess. By night, he was just a boy who danced and sang and drank and lived. (Y/n), as he'd decided long ago to call himself, twirled around the countertop, delighted by the brightness of this moment.

His eyes slid over the crowd, looking for someone lovely to dance with when the tavern door opened to reveal a blond boy with the strangest, loveliest red eyes (y/n) had ever seen.

Gracefully hopping off the bar to approach the newcomer, (y/n) took the boy's hand and asked with his most charming smile, "Care to dance, handsome?"

The blond jerked his hand away. "Not on your life, scum." Rolling his eyes, (y/n) pulled in his next choice, a cute little thing with her short curly hair dyed blue (a fashion he absolutely adored, and wished the nobles would practice as well).

As competent as his current dance partner was, though, (y/n) found his eyes trailing involuntarily to the blond several times throughout the night. He danced with most anyone, but the blond just sat sullenly at a table in the back of the room and nursed his drink, watching the revelry with revulsion.

What the hell is his problem?

(Y/n) climbed through the window to his room that night a little later than usual, having lost track of time. He quickly changed into his pajamas and got what little sleep he could.

The next morning, his maid awoke him with 'great' news. "Highness, another suitor has arrived!"

"Eugch," was (y/n)'s response as he rolled away from his maid. "Let's not do that today. Can't I just stay here and sleep the day away instead?"

"Another hangover, sir?" His maid -while not completely condoning his choices in sneaking out, drinking excessively, having romantic relations with commoners of various gender identities, and himself identifying as male- tried her best to be an ally to him. She was still ingrained in the old ideas but was willing to learn from and about her prince, which he greatly appreciated.

"No hangover today, Ellie. You know I do more dancing than drinking anyhow. I just don't feel like subjecting myself to the torture of meeting yet another dull, narrow minded suitor who wouldn't know a good time if it bit him in the ass."

"Language, sir."

"Apologies, Ellie," (y/n) replied with a smirk. Both of them knew he would curse as much as he pleased when it was just the two of them.

But he didn't win the debate. He was dragged from bed and dressed in his ridiculous princess-y clothes and ridiculous princess-y hairstyle that hurt his head. "Every time I see myself like this, my soul shrinks a little bit more."

"I'm sorry, sir. I wish things could be different for you."

"I know. You're too good to me, Ellie."

"You're damn right about that one, sir," she replied. She led him to the throne room to wait with his parents.

"Why do you even bother with suitors anymore? I'm not going to like any of them and we all know that."
