Every time he remembers who he is, it hurts a little bit more. And yet he can't help but crave that brief time in which he has no clue who he is, no clue that his mind and body are in disjoint, that his family will never really see him as a man.
He wants to forget, even if the remembering hurts.
Which is why he started using his quirk for stupid things. Instead of getting up, he has the cereal box fly to the table. Instead of pouring it in the bowl, he lets his quirk do the work for him. And before he's eaten half the bowl he's forgotten what he was doing, where he is, who he is.
And it scares him. After all, who wouldn't be scared to find they aren't quite sure who they are? Luckily, his memory loss is only a temporary side effect, but it gets worse over time. Each time he uses his quirk, his amnesia lasts a little longer than before. Eventually his memory might not come back.
Does this worry (y/n)? No.
But it scares the crap out of his boyfriend, Tenya Iida.
When they first met, (y/n) found it funny how Tenya worshipped rules and waved his arms about. He found he wanted to break the rules just to see what the guy would do to him.
Which is how (y/n) found himself replacing Tenya's shampoo with hair dye.
The class rep was livid the next day, his now-orange hair glowing like a stoplight as he demanded the culprit reveal themself. (Y/n) was easily discovered as he couldn't contain his laughter.
"Ms (l/n)!" Iida said, stopping (y/n)'s laughter in its tracks and making the boy wince. "Did you replace my shampoo with hair dye? Why would you do such a thing?"
"I just wanted to see what you would do," replied (y/n), a little cheered up by Iida's ridiculous arm movements. "But I- could I ask you to call me (y/n)?"
"A nickname? But we've just met, isn't that a little bit untoward-"
"It's not a nickname. It's just my name."
"But I thought your name was-"
"It's not! It's not that. My name is (y/n) and I'd appreciate if everyone would refer to me as (y/n)."
(Y/n) was shocked when Iida bowed to him. "My apologies! I will not make that mistake again and ensure no one else does, either."
"Thank you. And I, uh.. well..would you mind to use he/him pronouns when you refer to me?"
"Of course! Would you like me to tell the rest of our class to do the same?"
"Yes, that would be great, Iida, thanks."
Iida smiled at him. "Is this dye permanent?" He asked, pointing at his carrot-colored hair.
(Y/n) fell out of his chair.

After that, (y/n) found that he was only referred to as male, no questions asked. He couldn't help but wonder why everyone was so chill about it; after all, he didn't exactly have the most masculine hair and, despite wearing the boy's uniform, didn't exactly pass.
When he couldn't sleep, he wondered if they thought of him as a joke.
He had trouble making friends with his classmates at first. They were all kind to him (except for Bakugou, which is kind of a given), but he just couldn't connect with them. The first few weeks he sat alone for lunch, terrified to ask anyone if he could sit with them.
But eventually he didn't have a choice in the matter of making friends.
"Hey, (y/n)!" (Y/n) whipped his head around to see who was yelling for him. He spotted Kirishima waving to him (that spiky red hair is too easily recognizable) and approached his table awkwardly.
