Apollo grows tired faster than I expected, which tells me that I should exercise him more often now that I have the space to do so. Despite my anger towards Hardin's decision, I lead Apollo back home.
The moment we break through the trees, Apollo begins growing agitated. At first I think nothing of it, patting his neck and attempting to soothe him. But he yanks his head up and down, turning sharply.
"Woah! Apollo, calm down." I half snap, gripping the reigns in one hand and turning to turn him towards the stables.
But Apollo freaks.
Out of nowhere he rears up on his back legs, so high and quick that I let go of the reigns out of shock. Gasping as I fall, smacking the ground so hard that the wind is knocked out of me for a moment. The worst part is Apollo continues to panic, stomping his hoofs and sharply turning around, missing my body by centimetres.
With a slight groan, I push myself to my feet, the pain in my ribs coming alive. The two weeks the wound has been healing feel like a waste of time, especially when I notice a few speckles of blood on my vest seeping through.
"Want me to hunt it down? A beast like that is no pet for a lady to have." The sound of a man startled me.
"If by hunt, you mean kill, then I will tell you one time to stay away from my horse. Got it?" I glare menacingly, brushing off my jeans as I give the huge muscle man a dirty look.
"You must be the Alpha female, I was expecting someone a little less womanly." The male smiles like it's a compliment.
I scowl. "Go back to Hardin, stay away from the stables."
Storming off into the woods, I spend the next half an hour searching for Apollo before finally finding him half tangled up in a tree branch. He's jumpy as I approach him.
"Easy...it's okay, it's just me." I soothe, slowly reaching out to test his reaction.
Apollo snorts heavily, but gives no signs of bolting. So I untangle the reigns and stroke him, walking him a little to make sure he's good before climbing up and leading him back home.
This time he's calm, no wolves in sight as I lead him into the stables and untack him. Deciding to give him some treats, I mix up a little honey with oats, one of his favourite things. I feed him by hand, while using my other hand to gently undo the braids in his mane. Apollo relaxes completely, and I brush his shiny black hair from top to tail.
"There you go, as beautiful as ever." I murmur, lightly scratching his snout. Smelling the honey on my hand, Apollo tries to nibble, which makes me grin a little because it tickles.
"Come on." I sigh, knowing I have to face the music sooner or later. I've been in here almost an hour putting off facing Hardin.
Taking off Apollo's bridle, I place it on the hook and send him into his stall, locking it before walking away.
My palms sweat, showing my nerves as I cross the field and round the house, coming face to face with more just a few wolves. The fact that there's around fifty wolves in front of my house right now, irritates the anger a little more.
"Finally, thought you'd never leave that fucking thing." One man snorts.
"Do you mock me out of stupidity, or simply because you are afraid of a horse?" I retort icily, glaring at the men as I pass them.
Fun fact, I'm no longer in a good mood.
"I could kill it faster than it could blink." The man retorts confidently, glaring right back.
I near him, my anger rising with how he almost sneers down at me. So I do the only thing a woman of my height can do against a man like this.
I kick him in the dick so hard that his face turns purple and he smacks the dirt. The wolves around him automatically cover themselves, wincing as if they feel his pain.
"Anyone goes near my horse, and believe me when I say that I will fucking kill you." I spit, making it clear to every male wolf here that I'm not a pushover.
I've been gone five years, my reputation has dropped off the radar but I haven't changed. My wolf is gone but I can still kill a man and not feel a thing.
"I warned them." The familiar sound of Hardin's amused voice only serves to make my blood boil.
Spinning on my heel, I narrow my glare at the lean man.
"Give me the papers." I demand icily, our stretching my hand.
Hardin's smile fades instantly, he glanced at the men behind me. "Can we go inside and talk?"
"You want a divorce, there's nothing to talk about anymore." I spit, snatching the brown thin envelope from his hand.
Sliding the pen and paper out, I don't bother reading it and just sign the dotted line right in front of him, and the wolves without any remorse or care.
He wants a divorce, he's got it.
Slapping it against his chest, I make the mistake of looking up at him. The shock and hurt presented in his eyes only hurts me more.
"You actually signed it." Hardin breathes in disbelief, seemingly angry and taken back by that.
"If you didn't want me to sign it, maybe you shouldn't have had it printed up." I scowl and storm into my house, slamming the door behind me.
"AND GET RID OF THOSE FUCKING WOLVES!" I scream at him, angrily kicking my shoes off and stomping upstairs.
The second I shut my bedroom door, the anger vanishes and the dam breaks. Tears stream down my face, and I slide down the door, sitting on the floor as I bury my face into my arm to muffle the sobs.
How could he do this?
Tell me he wants to start again, almost convince me of it, make me consider it...and then completely change his mind?
