I close the door behind me, my chest feeling like it's constricting as I feel half suffocated. Perhaps partial panic, my body's way of warning me against my decision.
What other choice did I have? The pain is expected, no matter what I chose.
"Oh." Lisa gasps in fright as she turns the corner, eyes growing impossibly wide with fear and alarm as she comes face to face with the silver eyed beast.
"Hardin, this is Kade's mate, Lisa." I awkwardly speak up, offering a small smile to the frightened woman who attempts to smile politely.
She knows his name like every wolf across the world.
"The one that tamed Kade." Hardin comments bluntly, before our stretching his large hand. "Nice to meet you."
Lisa gives offers a strained smile, her hand trembling slightly as she shakes his hand, hers practically vanishing within his.
"You too." She whispers.
"If you need anything I'll be out back." I tell her quietly, already leading Hardin through the kitchen and out to the open lounge area.
"Do you want a drink?" I offer as he sits on the comfortable outdoor furniture.
"I'm good, thanks." He shakes his head.
I could feel the tension between us, the awkwardness of whatever comes next. It definitely doesn't feel like it used to, but I guess that's why therapy was invented.
"Ok." I mutter.
Grabbing a few wood logs from the stack, I place them in the fire pit and pour a little gas over it, before lighting a match and tossing it in. The flames are instant, warming my not so warm skin as the temperature begins to drop with the night.
Leaving some gap between us, I sit next to Hardin and stare at the fire, listening to it crackling and spitting as it begins to burn the wood.
"When they died I couldn't bare to see your disappointment, I was too ashamed to face you...to face the pack. Abandoning you was never the intention...I lost myself within my wolf, for a long time." I try and explain, to start clearing out some of the why's.
"Why didn't you come back? Even when you shifted again, you chose to stay away." He questions me, his voice soft, emotional.
It hurts, knowing that I caused him so much pain and confusion.
"I spent an entire year buried in my wolf, when she finally shifted back I came straight home to you. But...but after you made me leave, I changed, we changed. I became one with her." I admit, my throat tightening slightly as I recall all the victims.
"That's possible?" Hardin breathes.
I nod my head, feeling my eyes tear up slightly.
"I had no control, my temper was worse than the bloodlust and I wanted the pain to go away. So I started working for the Elders to satisfy my rage, and in return they removed the bite. I survived the ceremony and I held up on my end of the deal, but in removing the bite...my wolf became unresponsive." I explain quietly, pouring out the truth like it's holy water.
