I arrive at the clinic bright and early as requested.
"Hi, Doctor Eleanor is just finishing up with another patient. If you follow me I'll take you to the room you'll be staying in once the surgery is done." The familiar smiling receptionist leads me through the back, taking the door on the left unlike last time I was here.
The hallways are much wider in this side of the clinic, I assume so that beds can fit down them, or wheelchairs. She leads me down a couple of different hallways, passing the occasional nurse or cleaner.
"It will be about thirty minutes before you go down to the surgery room, feel free to make yourself comfortable." She says, leading me into a large room that actually resembles a bedroom.
Except the bed isn't huge, it's your standard hospital bed with a generous mattress and all fresh hospital sheets sat at the bottom of the bed folded up.
"The nurse will in a few minutes to make the bed and check in."
"Ok, thank you." I smile, grateful when the door shuts behind her as she leaves.
Dropping the bag on the arm chair in the corner, I sit down and cross my legs as I wait. Practically counting the seconds down, my fingers tapping impatiently. It feels like forever, and the longer I wait the more agitated I become.
Don't think about him. I remind myself for what feels like the billionth time since I left the house.
"Hiya, I'm Michelle. How are we feeling today? Nervous?" The friendly nurse smiles as she comes in, instantly getting to work on the bed.
"A little, I've never had surgery." I admit. Never had to, always healed.
"No one here for moral support?" She asks me with this almost pitiful look.
Moral support. That's funny.
"Just me." I smile forcefully.
"I'm sure it'll be just fine, Eleanor is very good as I'm sure you know. You're in good hands." She assures me, tucking the bottoms sheet under the corners of the mattress.
"Thanks." I whisper, offering a faint smile.
She makes the bed and leaves as fast as she came. I sit there again, trying to stay out of my own mind. Once I start questioning myself, I know I'll plant doubt in my mind. I don't need that right now.
So I wait, staring at the wall in echoing silence.
Some times passes before the door opens again, this time it's the Doctor herself.
"Feeling good, yeah?" She smiles.
"As good as I can be." I tell her.
She explains the procedure in detail, telling me exactly what is going to happen, when, how. A little too much detail in my opinion, I don't particularly care to know which parts they cutting into.
I just nod along like I'm listening, until she finally shuts up and hands me a hospital gown.
"Jewellery, clothing, everything has to come off. Just come out when you're ready and we'll head down." Doctor Eleanor tells me, exiting the room and shutting the door.
"Ok, you've got this." I whisper, breathing slowly to control my slightly racing heartbeat.
I remove my clothes, and my hair bobble just in case I'm not allowed it. Placing everything inside my bag, I quickly pull the hospital gown over my naked flesh, glad that it overlaps at the back to cover my ass.
