Double Act - Chapter 7

~~ Lara's P.O.V ~~

I stared at the paper in my hands, trying not to grin to widely and failing miserably. I could feel the anger radiating from my sister next to me in the car. It was really quite hard to ignore her deathly glares. I sighed, reading the note again.

He had given me his number. His number. That had to mean he liked me, right? Lara had no idea who had given me the note, and had just thought it was some geeky technical guy. I didn't really want to tell her that it wasn't, because she would just call me dillusional. I couldn't even begin to imagine how hard she'd hit me if I told her I bumped into Louis Tomlinson and got his number.

The car jolted to a stop, and my brother slipped out of the car, his girlfriend following closely behind. With Livvy making no effort to follow, I clambered away with my guitar out of her reach, out of the car and planting my feet onto the pebbles of our driveway. I slammed the car door and hurried inside the house, being careful as not to drop my guitar.

I could hear my twin's footsteps behind me, only spurring me on faster toward our bedroom door. I scrambled up the ladder of the bunk bed, the usual creaks and groans of protest meeting my ears, still firmly grasping the stringed neck of the instrument. Once I was up, I peered over the edge to find Liv glaring up at me.

She narrowed her eyes in an attempt to scare me, and snarled "Even if you were brave enough to text this guy, do you really think nerd boy is going to reply?" Her words chipped away at my insides, but I tried to pretend I wasn't listening.

"No one in their right mind would want to talk to you, squirt," she added spitefully. I rolled my eyes. I rested my guitar accross my crossed legs, and began to strum. I heard Liv laugh as she recognised the song, and winced as she slammed the door on her way out, yet I continued to play.

"You, with your words like knives and swords and weapons that you use against me,

You have knocked me off my feet again got me feeling like I'm nothing,

You, with your voice like nails on a chalkboard, calling me out when I'm wounded,

You, pickin' on the weaker man..."

I always asked myself why I put up with her insults and her yelling, but it wouldn't make things any easier on James if I yelled back at her. We'd end up as quabbling sibblings, and I never wanted to be seen like that. I wanted to be a happy family! As happy as we could be with no parents, anyway. And if I were to mirror what my sister puts me through and do the same to her, things would be much harder.

When she made fun of me about the note and the phone number, I could have easily told the truth. I could have told her straight out that it was Louis Tomlinson that I bumped into, that it was his number on the piece of paper. But I couldn't, I wouldn't. If she knew that, she'd take the number, she'd give it to everyone she knew, she'd phone him constantly and tell him she loved him, and where would that leave me? Louis would hate me.

And for some reason I really didn't want that to happen.

~~ Livvy's P.O.V ~~

I smiled at the folded slip of paper in my hand. Lara was so stupid sometimes, leaving things where I cold easily see them! Granted, I had spent half an hour looking through all the drawers and her desk to find it under her pillow.

I unfolded it, and there it was. The phone number of Lara's lover boy. For a second I thought about what I should do with it, and narrowed the possibilities down to 2 options. I could phone the number and find out who this loser was, or I could rip up the piece of paper. I thought for another moment and decided to do both.

With the number still firmly grasped in my balled up fist, I found my phone on the couch in the lounge. Grinning like a madman, I tapped in the number and held the phone to my ear. It rung and rung, nobody answering the mobile, and I rolled my eyes as it went to the guy's answering machine.

I smirked as a very nasally voice rang out in my ear. "I am so sorry, but I can't get to the phone right now! Don't hate me, I'm a busy man!" then a loud laugh sounded in the background of the recording, cutting off the person's voice. There was an irritated sigh. "HAROLD, I WILL SHAVE YOUR HEAD!" I winced at the loudness of the yell, shaking my head and ending the call. Anyone with an answering machine recording like that must be weird.

I chucked the phone down, along with the piece of paper, chuckling to myself. I had absolutely nothing to worry about. Lara's lover was a random kid with strange friends, by the sound of it, just like I had expected.

I stood from the sofa, grabbing the note once more. I glanced around the empty room before tearing the note in two with ease and watching it flutter to the floor in silence. A gasp sounded from behind me, and I spun round to see Lara with her guitar case in hand, obviously having just come in from a guitar lesson.

I smiled and shrugged innocently, and flounced past her as the tears started to spill down her cheeks.
