Chapter Thirty One: Everything Has Changed

Double Act - Chapter 31

~~ Lara's P.O.V ~~

I felt like if I won this competition with my sister, everything would get better. James would recover, Louis would apologize, and people at school and in the neighbourhood would finally stop treating me as an outcast. It wouldn't get better, but it made me feel like I was doing something to stop it and not just taking it on the chin.

"Are you ready for this?" Liv asked, clasping my free hand in hers and squeezing tightly as we peered out from the wings of the stage.

Was I ready? Was I ready to go out on to that stage and give my all on this performance? Yes, I was. It meant more than anything to my sister to show people what we could do, even if we didn't win this competition. If we went out on tonight's show, I want it to be because the public voted for people better than us, and not because I didn't try my hardest. Because I knew I would. I had to. For Liv.

And for James.

But was I ready to go out on that stage and see Louis' eyes on me the whole time? That was a hard question. He seemed pretty angry at me still, but it looked as if he might have been faking it. But I had snuck in to his room and I guess that wasn't the cleverest idea. His bright blue eyes were hard to resist and I knew that if I look at them during my performance, I might just dissolve.

So that's that, just don't look at him.

Well, that's easier said than done, have you seen the boy?

"Girls, off you go!" a burly man with a headset instructed from behind us.

We would be starting on stage, so as Dermot introduced us we were already in position. I gripped my guitar with shaky fingers as I willed myself not to look up, and then the lights dipped. All of the cameras turned to face us as a thin layer of smoke was pumped out on to the stage, encircling our ankles.

Showtime.

I strummed the guitar, my fingers moving rhythmically across the strings. It was an easy song to play and to harmonise to, and my sister and I loved it.

My sister sucked in a breath and began the first verse.

"All I knew this morning when I woke,

She flashed me a smile as she moved gently to the beat, and I took a breath before moving closer to the microphone for my part.

"And all I've seen since 18 hours ago,

Is green eyes and freckles and your smile in the back of my mind making me feel like.."

Then Liv stepped forward again and began to sing once more.

I joined her with the harmony, and smiled at how good we sounded in the almost silent arena.
