Double Act - Chapter 42

I settled in my chair beside Ella, who gave me a smile and continued her conversation with Joey about something. I nodded in acknowledgement before letting out a heavy sigh. One could only take so much Jennifer in one day, and I had had more than enough.

As I sat there, I thought about Jennifer. I had never thought about Jennifer willingly in my life. She had always just drifted through my mind on a course of destruction before I had manage to distract myself. I had never thought of her as a person worthy of forgiveness - oh god, now I sound like some crazy priest or something - and had always just automatically knew that she was bad news.

"Louis!"

My train of thought derailed, I looked up. "Well, well, well, if it isn't Gary Barlow," I greeted, faking disappointment. "I never thought I would see the day when you arrived after me,"

He laughed, shaking his head before taking his seat beside me. "Terribly sorry," he apologized with a tilt of his head. "I had some business to take care of. I was walking through a corridor minding my own business when I came across a 19 year old girl with long brown hair," he paused to glance at my shocked expression. "In a supply closet," he turned to face me, his hands clasped in front of him.

"Crying,"

I watched as Liv - sorry, Olivia, as she now demands that I call her - laughed at something James said before getting to her feet and brushing off her knees.

"You'll be watching, right?" she asked hopefully.

He smiled, and nodded, wincing at the obvious pain of such a simple action. After she had made sure he was alright, Olivia stepped back and stood beside me, giving me a wide berth as if I carried some sort of infectious disease. I rolled my eyes.

James had done his best in the condition he was in to persuade her that she was being silly and childish, but she constantly either ignored him or changed the subject. James was in no place to be firm with her and he of all people knew that, so he simply gave up after a while. I didn't mind. It wasn't his fault. He couldn't do anything in the position he was in.

"Now. You ready to win the X Factor?"

"Are you serious?"

Gary nodded.

I swallowed, my heart speeding up for one of two reasons. The first, I was terrified of how upset I had possibly made her by doing something. The second, I was delighted that she cried over me. The second made me a horrible person, I was sure of it.

I clasped the desk, and slid out my seat. "I have to go and talk to he-"

"You are going nowhere!" Joey ordered, glaring at me from where he had overheard me from a few metres away.

I smiled at him. "Now, now, Joey, it is rude to eavesdrop,"

His anger escalated, the vain in his forehead enlarging more than usual. "Louis, I swear, one of these days, I'll..."

"Finally get me to do what I'm told?" I finished for him, flashing him a wink before turning away. "But Gary, if she's upset, I have to see her,"

He shook her head. "Louis, we're live in 20 seconds. It won't do any good anyways. Besides, it's results time," he explained reasonably. I sighed, and settled in to my seat once more, my fingers tapping a rhythm on the table in front of me.
