Double Act - Chapter 16

~~ Lara's P.O.V ~~

"Are you sure, James?" I asked, slipping my arms into my coat. I was wearing tired black leggings, a dark red skirt that ended just above my knees, a white vest and a thick grey knitted cardigan that covered my arms and hung down by the hem of my skirt.

Liv stood beside me doing the same, wearing ripped-up light blue skinny jeans with a cute white tank top that she'd borrowed from Molly. She looked at James with the same terrified expression she'd worn all week.

James rolled his eyes, sitting himself up in the hospital bed. "Don't make me set that machine off again!" he threatened sarcastically. We smiled, but didn't laugh. It was a humorous comment, but the circumstances around us were too awful for us to even think about laughing.

Molly smiled proudly, filling me with the sense that I was doing the right thing for my brother. She glanced at her watch, and the smile was gone.

"Girls, we need to get going now!" she said, kissing James and allowing us to say our goodbyes in peace. Liv rushed over and wrapped her arms carefully around James, murmuring a goodbye and following Molly out.

I wandered over and did the same, but James stopped me before I left. "Listen, Lara," his expression was now deadly serious, nothing remotely funny about it. "Liv may be the eldest sister," he said, "But I want you to look after her,"

I nodded, and smiled. "I will, James." I left his bedside and walked to the door. "I promise." I turned to go.

"Oh, and Lara!" he cried. I turned one last time to look at him, and he grinned.

"Go and win X Factor,"

"We're never going to make it!" I cried, my leg bouncing up and down impatiently.

Mollie sat opposite me and Lara as the train hurtled through the British countryside. She glanced at her watch before peering out of the window, repeating the actions every few seconds. Green fields and trees flashed past as the voice of the train driver cut over the conversations in the carriage.

"Ladies and Gentleman, we are now arriving at Doncaster,"

All three of us leapt up, hurrying to the door and waiting for it to open. We stood in silence, clinging to the yellow bars around us as the train jolted to a stop. The doors slid open with a hiss, and we sprinted out onto the platform.

"Run!" Mollie shouted above the monotone announcements.

We did as we were told, not stopping until we had emerged out onto a quiet street. It was quite cold, with icy winds tugging at our clothes and hair.

"What are we gon-" Lara began, interrupted by a loud whistle.

We looked at Mollie as she removed her fingers from her mouth. She waved furiously at a passing vehicle that seemed to be a taxi and sure enough it slowed to a stop.

"Since when could you whistle?" I asked, completely in awe of the woman standing in front of us.

"Get in," she shot back.

I opened my mouth to persist for an answer but Mollie's glare darkened, so I shut my mouth and dived into the taxi. Lara sat beside me, followed by a determined looking Mollie, who leant forward to the driver.

"Listen, buddy," she ordered shoving a few ten pound notes in his face, "You get us where we wanna go as fast as possible or you will regret it!" she barked.
