Balcony Musings

Modern Muggle AU 

3rd Person POV:

His parents are arguing yet again. It has been like this for a while and Sirius can sense that it is going to get nasty soon. 

Not wanting to get mixed up in the mess more than he already is (and also not wanting to have a breakdown in front of his parents), he grabs his phone with his earphones and heads out to the balcony. 

Sirius puts in his earphones and jams out to whatever song comes on. He even dances and feels the music, forgetting some of his worries for even just a minute.

That's when a particular song comes on. 'Pretty Places' by Aly and AJ.

Sirius closed his eyes, taking in the music that played at the beginning of the song, there was something calming in it that he didn't quite understand but absolutely loved.

We could pack up this house, get out of town
Drive across country, one tail-light out
You wouldn't need anything else now, would ya?
Just all my books and your old Daytona

As the first verse played, all he could think about was his best friend, Remus. 

Remus 'Moony' Lupin was his brown-haired and tall best friend, someone who Sirius trusted with his life. They meet on the playground back when they were just 4 years old, and since then, they have somehow stuck together. 

When Sirius was with Remus, he felt at peace, like everything in the world was perfect. He started wondering about what it would be like to just get out of his house and go on an extremely long drive to escape everything with Remus.

All the pretty places

Leaving the past behind
I would for all the pretty places

"Going to all the pretty places with Moony would be amazing", Sirius thinks. Suddenly, his mind wanders and he starts conjuring up how it would feel to kiss him. 

"Huh, that's weird", Sirius says out loud. But now, he can't stop himself from thinking about being with Remus romantically. All the dates and the laughter and the hand-holding and the kissing..... everything just seems so desirable.

"Oh fuck, am I in love with Rem?", Sirius asks himself, though the answer is pretty obvious. How had he been so blind?

Whenever Remus talked about someone he fancied - which happened only like two times - Sirius would also get slightly jealous. He thought it was just because no one could ever deserve the greatness that is Remus, but now, he realizes it's because he wants Remus to fancy him.

As the song progress, Sirius can't help with imagine doing everything in those lyrics with Remus. Singing to the radio, watching the sunrise and sunset, feeling the breeze with the windows down. Everything seems so inviting to do with Moony.

As the bridge played, Sirius couldn't help by think just how true it was for him. He would go anywhere, travel to the most remote places in the world and he wouldn't mind it one bit if he had Remus with him, next to him for the entire time. Even his entire life. 

Sirius doesn't know how Remus feels about him and he sure wouldn't have known either if it wasn't for this song. 

No matter what, Sirius thinks, even if Remus doesn't have feelings for him, he is just glad that he has him in his life. To be with him through the good times and the bad, through his terrible home life and his amazing pranks. Through thick and thin, for the rest of his life.

As the song comes to an end, he hears someone's footsteps on the balcony. He removes his earphones and turns around to see Regulus, his younger brother.

He has tears in his eyes and is so evidently exhausted due to the hell-hole that is their house. 

"Reg, come here," Sirius says with his arms open. Regulus silently approaches him and hugs Sirius as his tears turn into sobs. 

They stand there on the balcony in the night for who knows how long. Once Regulus has calmed down a little, they both sit down. Sirius silently hands his brother one of the earphones and replays the song for both of them.

Eventually, Regulus falls asleep on his lap out on the balcony. As Sirius feels the beginnings of sleep coming over him too, he closes his eyes. His thoughts as he drifts off to sleep are of being with Remus, kissing Remus, loving Remus, and taking him to all the pretty places.
