Chapter 1: Convenience Store Blues

A/N: I will do my best to keep this brief. This is a reader (YN - "Your Name") x Rem fanfiction that I have been writing for well over a year. As it currently stands at publishing this, it is over 120K words in it's entirety. So to say the least, this fic will not be abandoned. I am making the first 14 chapters immediately readable. Every Friday I plan to upload the next series of chapters (around 2 to 4 at a time). There is so far, a total of 30 which will encompass Arc 1 and 2, with more currently written but unedited/revised that I will be working on as the main 30 are uploaded.

I should advise however, this series will have some small lore spoilers in regards to later arcs of the Web Novel, but as it stands right now, in the first 30, if you have watched the first Season, you will not be spoiled. If there is ever a spoiler beyond the second season, I will be sure to make an A/N at the end of the previous chapter for said spoiler.

Finally, while this is a "Rem x Reader" fanfic, this story does not "insert" the reader over the main character, Subaru. Everything is made to be as lore friendly as possible with very little liberties taken. The first 3 chapters are background for the reader, while chapter 4 will be the first chapter that will have Rem actually in it.

Chapter 1: Convenience Store Blues

???: I have given him a most, tenuous and difficult path. Soon he will be closer then ever... I'm so happy... But perhaps he will need a friend, an ally, a confidant.

???: Yes, that is what I shall do. I will bring him from his same world. He will be so close to him, and for that, I will be eternally ENVIOUS of him.

YN was headed from home, to a new home. Being given an opportunity he simply could not turn down, he was forced to leave early in the morning to make it there in time. Little to say, with little rest, he'd been driving through the hours, listening to different radio stations filter in and out as they came and went.

It was summer time, and by mid-day now, it was getting warm with the sun shining down.

By the time the sun reached it's highest along the path he was set to drive, both him and his car were running low on fuel.

YN: Ohh, *sigh* I don't think this thing has air conditioning, this is going to be rough I can tell already.
At the beginning of his journey, there was little choice, either hitchhike with a backpack, or be loaned an old compact economy car, and with it, YN could at least carry more of his personal possessions to his new home.

Day turned to night, as he put distance behind him across the land.

Eventually YN came upon an oasis along his long journey ahead. The truck stop, boldly named "LAST CHANCE GAS, BEER, AND FOOD" as its bright, dated neon lights gave inquiry to, loomed as one of the only man-made structures for as far as the eye could see. A sign under its neon lights had listed the distances to the next gas station. Starting from the top, each had been subsequently crossed out over time, with the distance from this location being listed as greater and greater each time.

Truly this stretch of road was no longer eagerly traveled. And as such, he felt the need to get gas and provisions here before the long stretch ahead.

Pulling up to the gas pump, YN stepped out from his car and gave a long stretch. Taking his wallet out, YN attempted to swipe his card, however, he was surprised to see how dated the pumps really were.

YN: No card slot, huh?

Looking down to the pump's handle, a label just above it read: "PAY INSIDE"

Picking up the pump handle, YN could hear the pump begin to hum to light, and the lights behind the price and amount tickers flickered on, illuminating the two sets of zeros for each. With that, he opened the gas cap, and let the fuel flow.
