Chapter 155: The Cursed Goddess Statue
The conversation with Ram stretched far longer than YN expected, and by the time he stepped into the corridor again, the light slanting through the Mansion's windows had shifted in tandem with the time-keeping magic crystals on the wall. Gone was the green of the morning's Wind Time, and in its place, arrived the red of this afternoon's Fire Time.
The halls of the mansion felt strangely quiet in comparison to all the conversing that had gone on that morning. It was peaceful, but heavy in that way silence becomes after such a long, meaningful talk.
He felt somewhat rejuvenated, though not from rest. Conversation with Ram always left him with a strange mixture of clarity and exhaustion, like she had managed to peel back another layer of his inner-self without ever lifting a finger. Rubbing the back of his neck, he exhaled, trying to steady the quiet storm still churning in his chest. After everything had happened, he needed time to mentally process, and more importantly, something to anchor himself that wasn't aimlessly sitting at Rem's bedside.
The only thing that made sense right now was heading out to resume his daily training. Movement, discipline, and sweat were far easier to contend with challenge than the thoughts Ram had stirred up.
Hoping he would not run into anyone on the short walk it would be to the closest of the Mansion's lesser used side doors, he managed to slip his way to the ground floor.
???: —Aniki.
—Yet, just as he had stepped off the last stair and had his desired door in sight, a voice from behind him, up on the landing he had just come down from, beckoned to him.
Algol: Today is the day I tag along, just like I said I would.
Looking down at him with her hands still in her jacket pockets, after getting his attention, she concealed the lower half of her face behind her tall collar.
For a few days, YN thought maybe Algol had changed her mind on wanting to train alongside him, but given she had her duty to help Beatrice locate the last of her fellow replicants still, it made sense her joining him was delayed.
Now though, that wasn't the case.
Descending the stairs, she stood next to YN with an air of determination upon her brow.
YN: Well, I guess some company might be a nice change of pace.
As he tried to picture how this additional variable would go on to change how his training would pan out, he stopped once again and collected his thoughts.
YN: The only problem is... I don't know how, or what you'll train on, or with.
Truthfully, YN hadn't given her addition to his otherwise solitary training much thought.
Algol: Is there a reason I cannot just do whatever Aniki is doing?
Scratching his cheek nervously as he tried to imagine Algol and her small stature attempting the same strenuous activities he did, YN had to admit that wasn't feasible.
YN: It's not as simple as that unfortunately... And I can't really imagine what you'd be otherwise trying... Clind-san set me up with a routine of drills and practices, but you don't have anything like that.
Shrugging to his words, Algol still wanted to make the most of it.
Algol: For this first day, I will simply observe. There is a chance Senpai could offer some insight as to what would be worthwhile for me to do. I will ask her once we return.
For the time being, she seemingly figured out a rough idea of what she could do for today, and as such, Algol remained determined to come along. Making their way out into the Mansion's outermost gardens, YN took the first step off the pavers, and onto a lightly beaten path through the trees that winded itself through the woods, in the opposite direction of the Mansion.
