Chapter 146 (Christmas Special): The Year of The Cat
Rumbling along, the carriage pulled by Patrasche was filled with its occupants.
With only being settled into their new residence for a few days, Roswaal was already keen on getting Emilia back on the Royal Selection campaign trail. While he himself admitted it was fairly early to be going about such activities so soon after everything had happened, the Margrave was nonetheless convinced this was an opportunity Emilia shouldn't pass up, and she agreed.
It would be a quick trip, after all. They'd leave early in the morning for the town of Tamaris, up north towards the border of the Holy Kingdom of Gusteko. In fact, the town flanked the river bank that served as the official border between the two nations.
While Otto, Subaru, and then eventually YN would alternate between manning the driver's seat for this half-day journey, this trip also brought along Algol, Beatrice, Garfiel, and of course, Emilia herself.
Going over the subject of their destination, Otto professed to them all he had been there before, back in his traveling merchant days.
Otto: —It's a very old town... Many of the people there are poor farmers, but only textile crops grow in the cold climate, so food gets brought in from the south. A merchant can make alright money with a cart full of grain if the market is right.
Nodding to his antidote, Emilia relayed to them all what Roswaal had told her.
Emilia: The town also has very few demi-humans as well, being so far from the Kararagi and Vollachia borders.
To this factoid, Subaru spoke up.
Subaru: Can I ask a question?
Beatrice, sat upon Subaru's lap, had her hand raised by Subaru's own, like a student in class asking the teacher for permission to speak. Getting a nod from the half-elf, he went on.
Subaru: If there won't be much support to be drawn from the population here... Why even bother coming?
Otto: Natsuki-san... If Emilia-sama only pandered to demi-humans, it could cause a lot of rumors to form. If she can be seen she's willing to work with and listen to other groups too, it really helps paint her in a better light.
Subaru: Ah, I guess I didn't word it well enough for what I meant. I understand that, I'm just afraid that Emilia-tan might face some prejudices like Saluzzo again...
Silently listening on from the driver's seat, with Algol next to him, YN couldn't deny he was of the same disposition as Subaru. He really got Saluzzo-vibes from this trip.
YN: Let's not forget that Emilia-sama's own appearance is even seen with caution from the most poorly treated demi-humans. We learned that the hard way.
While having not been there for it, Otto and Garfiel both had heard of what occurred in Saluzzo. The idea of a multi-armed monster and a dragon scared Otto, but Garfiel only could be elated with how he wanted to fight them both.
Emilia: I guess it doesn't help either that we're going there for a festival...
Not lost upon Emilia, even their reasoning for traveling to Tamaris was the same.
Emilia: Though it might not be the easiest demographic for me to appeal to... I want everyone to work together and get along, so I need to be able to listen and work with people all over the kingdom, —even in places like Tamaris.
Letting her will be known, Subaru nodded to the one who held his heart, wanting to back her as well as he could. With his understanding now, Emilia went on.
