As it crashed to the ground, YN realized this was the fifth magic creation tool he'd defeated. With the back of his hand, he wiped the sweat that had formed on his brow, stemming from his extensive use of mana thus far.

This latest one had been easy to take down, as all he had to do was get behind it, smash the magic crystal powering it, and it was out like a light.

I never thought I'd be throwing hands with a blender, so what's next? An air fryer?

So far the contraptions he had taken on dispatching were an odd assortment. The most recent had been a large industrial blender that had found itself wandering out of a bakery. Before that, was a fabric spooler, a printing press, what appeared to be a concrete or mortar mixer from a construction site, and finally an accompanying rock or ore crusher.

The few times he had been forced to use Jiwald or El Jiwald to destroy the magic crystals when he couldn't get close enough to smash them, had used a considerable amount of mana since Algol wasn't at his side.

After he had dispatched his first magicreation tool, a small retinue of city guardsmen had shown up, and had said they were here on Mayor Leno's orders to assist YN in fighting these contraptions, and to offer an apology for not recognizing his status as Roswaal's new Seneschal.

While the leader of the retinue had commended YN for his assistance in this, he did also admit that the Seneschal himself wasn't as efficient at going after these machines like Garfiel was.

Truthfully though, the sentiment was mutual, —he too found them hard to rely on.

I get that the mayor probably answers directly to Roswaal more or less given he is the Margrave, but these guards he sent... They're only good for using as a distraction so I can flank the magicreation tools and disable them.

He felt guilty for putting them in danger like this, as it really did take magic like he possessed, or Garfiel's own massive measure of strength to easily handle these erratic machines, —abilities none of these city guardsmen really had. Sure, they were well equipped to handle most crime seen in the city, but something of this magnitude was far from their forte.

What concerned YN the most though about this, is that he wasn't like Subaru who had Return By Death handy to redo any of these altercations should one perish or be greatly harmed in this dangerous endeavor. Even if someone died, a reset early enough to save them would make it worthwhile, and even better if it was before things actually had begun to kick off, so some sort of warning could be announced.

Subaru's not here though. It's me, Algol, and Garfiel. It's up to us to rescue Frederica and make things right.

Truthfully, a lingering apprehension was heavy on his mind knowing that the safeguard he had luckily been able to fall back on when problems became exceedingly desperate wasn't there this time.

Subaru was probably none the wiser that such a calamity was unfolding, and thus, YN couldn't rightfully expect to rely on his fellow wayward revealing companion's painful ability for every challenge life threw at him. He needed to be able not only rely on himself, but also his ability to coordinate with those who relied on him in turn.

I can only imagine what Garf and Algol are doing to fight these things too...

Facing off against this large foe, it too was a magicreation tool.

With a large bucket at the end of a long metal arm, the fitful machine had rolled off a plot of dirt where a new building was being put up. Its function had clearly been to use that large bucket to move a great volume of dirt in a single scoop. Built onto the framework of a ground dragon-drawn carriage, just as the crane had been, this contraption could perhaps do the digging work of a few dozen men in a whole day, in just an hour or less on its own.
