Chapter 162: Unforgiven
YN: *Yawwn*
Seated in a chair, midmorning sunlight spilled across YN's face, doing little to hide the fact that he hadn't slept much at all. His already ruined sleep schedule had betrayed him again; he hadn't managed to fall asleep until well past midnight, and even then, only lightly. Algol had been the one to wake him.
Although it might have been expected for YN to sleep well into the afternoon, this morning, he wasn't afforded such luxury.
While there were morning activities planned by none other than Anastasia Hoshin to entertain her guests, there were other concerns.
Garfiel, the Emilia camp's bodyguard, had yet to return from the night before, but Mimi also hadn't either.
There was yet to be any sort of cause for alarm, however, that hadn't stopped Mimi's siblings from bolting out at first light to search for her anyway.
It was Garfiel's absence, however, that left YN where he was now.
To keep Subaru free to remain with Emilia and enjoy her company, YN had volunteered to take over bodyguard duties for the morning. As a result, he now sat just outside the ongoing event, stationed in the promenade hallway while the others mingled inside.
In the end, it's still killing two birds with one stone for me.
What Anastasia had planned was a large-scale breakfast event, which, uniquely, had the guests cooking their own food on large iron, flattop griddles.
Even from outside here in the promenade hallway, YN had heard Subaru exclaim out loud in recognition, as once he had seen what this "traditional kararagi" dish was that was the feature for the event, it was immediately familiar.
Subaru: Okonomiyaki?!
Yet, just like most things in this world that had clearly come from their old one, it had begun to be called a slightly different variation than that of its traditional name.
YN: '—Daisukiyaki,' huh?
Receiving one of these on a plate, YN was handed one of his own to have, despite only remaining outside the event, doing his duty.
While he was thankful to have avoided the event altogether, it appeared as if the second bird YN had thought he got with his stone had come back for revenge.
Algol: —Aniki, you will have it, will you not? I prepared it especially for you, —aware you have not had anything proper for a meal yet today.
Having departed the breakfast for a moment to deliver this to her Contractor, Algol not only wished YN could have joined them, but rather, she was aware of how long he had more than likely been skipping any worthwhile sustenance this time away from the Mansion.
Not about to say no to the pink-haired girl, YN accepted the food.
YN: Thank you, Algol. And yes, I'll get around to having some.
Before leaving for Priestella, Ram had forced no fewer than a dozen of her steamed tatos into his hands, each wrapped neatly in parchment. For nearly a year now, her tea and those tatos had been the only things YN could reliably stomach.
He knew exactly why she'd done it.
By now, his supply had long since gone stale. He'd stretched it far longer than intended, but even so, they were still easier to swallow than most things.
That truth didn't change when he took a bite of Algol's half-burnt daisukiyaki.
Whether she'd made it perfectly or ruined it completely didn't matter. Anything that wasn't Rem's cooking, save for Ram's tolerable tatos, tasted the same to him; bland and foul. It mattered not how well or poorly the food was prepared or presented, all of it tasted alike to him.
