Chapter 159: Who Can It Be Now?
This vessel's stature does not lend itself well to heights!
In her early morning struggle, this short, pink-haired girl scanned her surroundings for a solution to her problem.
The only viable option is to borrow a chair from the dining hall. It is all I can manage
Feather duster in hand, she set it carefully back onto the cart she pushed through the Mansion's expansive halls each morning.
As the newest maid, Algol had worked long enough to know her duties, where supplies were kept, and how to solve the small hurdles that cropped up throughout the day. That did not mean she was yet proficient at them, nor quick.
Today must be the day Ram-nee-sama is able to depart on time!
Determined as always though, Algol forged on ahead.
From her current corridor, she would need to cross the foyer, enter the dining hall, retrieve a chair, then use it as a boost in the next hall to reach the crown molding and dust it properly.
Normally, there was a step stool reserved for maid use, but Petra was currently using it to dust the upper bookshelves in Roswaal's study. The Margrave himself was out for the day on business in Costuul, having flown there shortly after breakfast.
Her shoes, clacking across the tiled, and freshly mopped floor the foyer were the sole sound echoing out in the quiet Mansion until a new rhythmic noise of duller origin parodied the sharp clack in tempo.
*Knock* *Knock* *Knock*
Algol froze mid-step. A second series of knocks followed, resonating through the foyer and draining the color from her face.
Algol (whisper): Oh no.
Visitors.
Her cyan-blue eyes widened as they fixed on the tall, formidable wooden doors separating her from whoever waited beyond. Anxiety surged through her, along with the crushing realization that, as a maid, this responsibility now fell squarely on her shoulders.
Oh no, Oh no...
*Knock* *Knock* *Knock*
A shallow panic crept into her thoughts.
Young as she currently was, both physically and mentally, Algol had very few interactions with strangers on her own. Always, until this very time, she'd had someone else with her to handle these sorts of things, but now, that wasn't the case. She was all on her own.
Her gaze darted left, then right, searching desperately for an alternative.
Would it be a worthwhile endeavor to seek someone else out?! —No. That might take too long, and whoever is knocking may leave thinking no one is present... If the reason they are here is urgent however, this would not be good!
It would take too long to run and get Petra, and what if she wasn't where she believed her to be? Algol seriously considered leaving her own body in spirit form to go quickly find someone else. However, that would certainly only complicate things if someone else got to the door in the midst of search, hearing the knocking themselves, and saw Algol passed out without her corporal form inhibited.
*Knock* *Knock* *Knock*
Algol: —!
With growing panic, she took a soft step across the tiled floor. If she could make her way to the adjacent window of the front doors, she could at least peer at whoever this guest was from between the gaps in the curtains.
