Nikolai was leaning against the door frame with a box in his hands, I sighed with relief and tucked my phone under the pillow.
"You scared me there a little," I said as I veered around to look at him.
"Why? What were you doing on that phone eh?" He smirked stepping towards me.
"I was just checking if I got any important mail."
"Sure, that's why the colour of your face seeped as soon as I spoke" he sat on the chair beside my bed and kept the box near me, a sweet smell wafted from inside it.
I actively ignored his allegations, and crinkled my nose at him, "what's in it?"
"See for yourself" he glanced at the box
I opened the box and found it filled with each type of doughnut, "Olivia told me that you loved them, so I thought-"
"Thank you" I interject, "this is so thoughtful"
He shrugged, "it simply occurred to me that how alone you might be, hope this cheers you up"
By the time he finished speaking I had worked my way halfway through a classic glazed, "you can surely take a guess" I said with my mouthful and he chuckled.
After a while when I had laughed till my stitches ached and we both wiped cleaned the box, he leaned back and I stretched out on the bed, "this was the perfect meal" I exclaimed.
"True, I didn't had my lunner today,"
"Lunner?" I looked at him confused.
"Yeah, lunch and dinner"
I cocked an eyebrow at him and he looked back at me nonchalantly the shrugged, "you do know that it's not a word, right?" I said glancing at him sideways.
"It is," he mumbled in defence.
"No" I objected.
"Yes, it is... I just used it in a sentence" he looked at me with a smirk and cocked eyebrow.
I continued looking at him and shook my head in denial.
"stop looking at my lovely self please, and if someone, who was too lazy to wake up early for breakfast can invent brunch, then why can't I invent lunner? I am a cop, I miss lunch and dinner while fighting crime."
"That's fair enough" I laughed at his humour, it was the freshest I had felt in the last few days, flashing back, I had quite forgotten my easy self, the laughter and "just being" was a rare occurrence, especially after the night I found out about Olivia and Tanner.
The thoughts suddenly grew bleak, and Nikolai noticed, "are you okay?" He asked, brows wrinkled.
"Yeah,' i replied, "I was just thinking about stuff"
"What stuff?" I wanted someone so badly to share things that were going on in my life but the lack of confidence and trust was making it hard.
"About this accident", I looked up at him, he was now leaning forward, elbows on my bed, "what will happen after I am allowed to leave for home?"
He gazed at me uncertainly, "you needn't worry about that, I have looked through the paperwork, even though there could be done serious charges against you for breaking the law, your situation provides an exception, given that the doctor provides a detailed explanation for your actions or circumstances that led to it."
I nodded, looking down at my intertwined fingers.
"Some fines is all you're going to get" he took my hand in his, "now-" before he could say anything my phone chimed, he let go of my hand and I checked it only to find a text message from Amy.
