"I am sorry to say this but your fatherly figure seemed a little eerie to me," Nikolai said warming his hands.
"He was a little weird today," I replied as I walked behind Wembley's desk. His words collided against the walls of my brain again and again. I declined in his chair and flipped the paperweight while reflecting on the meaning that he wanted to convey.
He was pretty mercurial. The way he changed tones and expressions was quite unlike him. His warmth kept coming and going and what made me more sceptical about things was just one thing that he said, 'they are dangerous people' that particular are got stuck in my mind. I didn't tell him anything about those people, I didn't know much myself. Although, it could be possible that I might be overthinking this. What happened with Olivia had left me pretty shaken and it made me a question, everything and everyone.
"Kiara!?" Nikolai's sharp voice brought me back to reality. "I have been calling your name for a while now." He said walking towards me, "what are you thinking?"
I stood up and he took my hand, "I was just thinking about Mr Wembley."
His concern grew as lines formed on his forehead, "what about him?"
"A lot of things he said, it didn't make sense."
"What do you mean?" His brows furrowed as he bit into his lip.
"Like, he kind of stressed on how I need to back off from everything, how I need to stop digging deeper. Then while we were talking about the cult, he said these people 'are' dangerous. Then he specifically said and I quote, I have been spending each day keeping an eye on you and your situation, trying to figure out how to keep you away from this so you won't get harmed but you just don't want to live a normal life."
"Well, that sounds a little too much of concern to me." He said leaning back at the table.
"Exactly." I mirrored Nikolai's action as I too bit my lip, "I don't want to think what my mind is forcing me to think right now."
Nikolai took a deep breath and glanced at me nervously, "there's something that crossed my mind as well."
I looked at him and he dropped my hand, "when I first saw him in the hospital, I didn't pay any attention but today when I heard him talk, he reminded me of someone."
My throat went a little as I waited for him to continue, "come on, we are not in a novel, you don't have to build suspense here."
He took a deep sigh, "look I could be completely wrong because it's been like twenty years now."
"Nikolai." I snapped and he closed his eyes.
"Fine fine... He reminds me of the man that my mother was rumoured of having an illicit affair with."
My eyes widened, "what the.."
"...I am not sure."
"What if you are?"
He shook his head in a glitch, "then maybe we'll be able to solve this quicker than we think."
"This is the biggest clue we have had since the start. This puts everything into perspective."
He held me by my wrists, "then tell me how."
"But this also means that it's been Mr Wembley all along."
"What?"
My heart wrenched as every possibility of this being true crossed my mind, "Mr Wembley has tried to psyche me out". the door opened, cutting me off.
"Kiara." Alice greeted me with a smile, "Mr Wembley told me I'll find you here." Her heels clicked on the floor as she stopped in front of me, extending her hand.
