*Erin's POV*
In life you make decisions that lead to a chain of events. My chain started with my mother being arrested. I went over the top and broke rules. This breach of the rules resulted in the intelligence unit being threatened.
The choice was between destroying the unit or leaving Chicago, the life I knew and loved, my friends who were like family to me, my home and this one very special man, Jay Halstead.
Thinking about him made my eyes teary.
I didn't say goodbye for the simple reason that one of his looks would have been enough to make me stay.
But I couldn't have stayed there, I had messed up my friends' lives enough already, the last thing I wanted was to take their jobs away from them too.
Hailey Upton had joined the unit a few weeks before I left. I knew she would be capable to fill my spot up and sooner or later they would forget about me but I knew that I'll never forget them.*Jay's POV*
For a few weeks now my life was upside down.
Erin had disappeared without telling me why, without even saying goodbye.
At first I thought that she just needed some distance from the situation with me and Abby, her mother and everything, but the longer she stayed away without calling or replying to the messages I left her, the more I had the feeling that she would not come back.
Since I hadn't found her anywhere, I had driven to our apartment, but when I got there everything was gone, except for a few boxes in which I found a photo of us.
This photo was now on my desk and I glanced at it when I felt like nobody was looking at me just like I did right now.
When I saw the abandoned apartment I should have realized that Lindsay was gone, but I just didn't want to realize that she had disappeared from my life.
A few hours earlier I had seen her and wanted to propose to her, but in retrospect I was sure that it would not have been a good idea.
I was the reason we broke up.
If I had better controlled those damn divorce papers back then I would maybe be holding Erin in my arms right now.
My hand had moved by itself to my mother's ring, which I was still carrying around with me as if Erin were suddenly standing in front of me.
