Even though I'm kind of sad about our breakup, I'm really proud of Emma. She's making a difference. I've watched the video about 3 times. I'm definitely not watching it now.

"Ugh, aren't you tired of watching that?" my Mom says as she comes downstairs.

"8 million people have seen it." I say.

"I just don't get it." my Mom says while rolling her eyes.

"Well, I think it's brave." I say confidently. "You know kids are saying there's gonna be another prom."

I can see my Mom's face harden.

"Someone's offered to pay for it." I say.

"Really...who?" my Mom asks.

"Um...I think those broadway actors that were at the PTA meeting." I say.

"When is this prom?" my Mom asks.

"Tonight I think." I say.

"Let's go." my Mom says while grabbing her keys.

"What?" I say in shock.

"Get in the car Alyssa." my Mom says sternly.

Oh my.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

My Mom pulls up to the school and tells me to stay in the car.

If she was going to make me stay in the car, then why'd she bring me?

I look out of the window of the car, and I see Shelby, Kaylee, Nick, and Kevin walking into the gym. I quickly get out of the car and follow behind. I have to see what kind of stunt they're gonna pull.

"Emma, can we talk to you for a minute?" I hear Shelby say as I walk into the gym. "I was a jerk and I'm sorry. You deserve to go to prom like any other kid."

"What? I thought you hated me. I thought you all hated me." Emma says as Shelby hugs her.

"Oh they hated you and it came from years of deeply rooted intolerance." the actor with glasses smirks.

"I'm sorry too Emma." Kaylee says. "You know you should be like a teacher."  Kaylee says to him.

"Yeah, you could be our drama teacher." Shelby smiles.

"You're hired!" Mr. Hawkins says.

"I'm a teacher." the actor says.

"No! No! This is what I was afraid of!" my Mom yells.

Okay this needs to stop...now.

"Mom!" I exclaim.

"Let me finish!" my Mom yells

"No, you have got to stop talking and just listen, okay?" I say. "People don't turn gay...they are who they are."

"You don't know what you're saying-

"I do. I do." I say cutting my Mom off. Look, I know how you were raised, but...the world's a different place. And sure, it's not great, but...it's better because of people who have the courage to be who they are."
