I watch Irina in the intense sunlight that somehow makes my eyes squint to see her beauty. She smiles over at me, her glossy lips tinted a soft shade of pink that reminds me of the cherry blossoms back in Japan when I was there for a short vacation last year.In the distance, I hear birds chirping, their singing is the only thing filling the comforting silence between us. We occasionally exchange a brief glance that somehow makes her look away shyly, and I find it all the more heartwarming and intimate. It feels warm, but the warmth is not coming from the sun shining boastfully over us while we lie on the meadow, but from her closeness and presence.
I can't remember the last time I felt this comfortable and peaceful, but I have to admit that I could feel the sensation for eternity without getting tired of it. I'm lying on my side, leaning on my arm, and she's sitting next to me with her legs elegantly folded. She is like a delicate flower and the floral pattern on her dress makes her blend in with the meadow we are sitting on.
I pluck a chamomile that sticks out between our bodies, desperately trying to reach the sun, and tuck it into her shiny hair. The dark brown mocha changes to a lighter caramel in the light, almost making me taste the sweetness on my tongue. She smiles at me one last time before standing up from the grass and looking down at me.
"Come," she says, and her voice blesses my ears with its melodic pitch. I don't know exactly what she's up to, but I decline with a smile and instead watch her walk lithely through the flower meadow. Her steps are soft, almost as if she were floating, and her hands are stroking through the tall grass, which is adorned with a wide variety of flowers.
She turns to me after a few steps, her laughter ringing in my ears along with the chirping of birds. Her laughter is joyful and the dress that sits loosely on her body swings with every movement she makes. Usually, Irina wears more mature and daring dresses, but I have to admit that something about the almost innocent look of her just makes my heart pound.
But everything takes a drastic turn all of a sudden.
As if in the blink of an eye, the expression on her beautiful face changes. The sweet smile is no longer there, instead, there is distress and misery emanating from her eyes, which are just looking fearfully at me. I sit up in alarm, not understanding where this sudden fright is coming from, but before I can even open my mouth to utter even a small word, my surroundings change.
It is darker, colder and the next thing I notice is how the colorful and cheerful meadow catches fire. The hot flames burn in my eyes and Irina stands in the middle of them. She doesn't say anything, but her eyes are focused on me the entire time. It's as if she is apologizing to me with her eyes, but I can't quite grasp what the reason is.
I try to reach her, desperately attempting to stretch my hand towards her and force my legs to move, but with every step I take towards her, it's as if an invisible hand is pulling her away from me. The meadow stretches and when I try to call out to her, no sound comes out of my mouth, as if someone has robbed me of my voice.
And then everything goes dark.
I tear open my eyes, sweat dripping from my face and neck. My shirt is completely drenched and my breath is rapid as if I've run a marathon. I desperately try to gasp for air and my eyes now focus on the familiar furniture I see every day. I look around my room and it makes my troubled state come down a bit.
"What the hell?" I pant heavily and fall back into the pillow, which by the way is also soaked.
I allow myself a few minutes to come down from this dream as I take deep breaths, forcing my fast-beating heart to regulate. I rub my face with both hands in an aggressive manner and pull my eyebrows together as my eyes focus on the ceiling above me.
