"Sora?" I choke hard, my own saliva catching in my throat."Surprise!" she greets enthusiastically, her arms stretching above her head and with a big smile, making it possible to count all her 32 teeth.
Out of all the people in the world, I least expected her here and especially unannounced. We haven't seen each other in almost a whole year, well like I haven't seen everyone else back home since I came to the States. I would have expected a surprise like this from my friends if they weren't busy themselves, but not Sora.
On the other hand, I can't really say I'm shocked because she's always been this spontaneous and has always done whatever she feels like doing. Even if the people around her didn't exactly agree all the time, she always did her own thing and didn't give a shit about anyone else's opinion.
"What are you doing here?" I ask, still standing in the doorway with wide eyes that it feels like they might fall right out of their sockets.
She pouts, dropping her arms limply beside her body. "You're so lame. At least pretend you're happy to see me again."
I try to smile, but only manage a half-hearted upward tug of the corners of my mouth. She notices, as she always understands my behavior, and rolls her eyes. My eyes fall on the suitcase sitting next to her on the doorstep and my eyes widen again at its size. Did she bring her whole closet or what?
She follows my gaze and the next thing I know she's grabbing the handle of the suitcase and squeezing past me into my apartment.
"Will you get out of the way, geez." she scolds as she pushes me aside and then brushes away her hair that has ended up in her mouth from her little battle with me.
She kicks her shoes off her feet and starts analyzing my apartment. Her curious eyes roam over all the furniture and details, but I can tell she doesn't like the decor. She has always been a person who likes it more friendly and I like it more black.
She then turns to me, a gleeful look written in her eyes before she runs up to me and wraps her arms around my neck. I can't hug her back, though, because I'm still shocked to see her here. My arms lie limp next to my body, but she, fortunately, pulls back after a few seconds.
It's weird having her so close to me again, considering we haven't been as close as we actually have for the past few years. I am not doing it on purpose being so distant, but it just comes naturally.
"Sora." I draw her attention back to me after she invades my privacy. "Seriously. Why did you come unannounced?"
Besides not expecting her, it bothers me that she came in between everything that's going on in my life right now. I have no place for her in all the chaos, nor did I plan for anyone else to find out. And I don't care who it is.
Until I figure out how I want to mold my future, I don't want anyone from home here because I simply don't want them to see what a disappointment I am. They wouldn't understand how I went from being a student who did exemplary well on his exams, so that he got an internship right away, to a gangster just because he fell in love.
Love can do many things to people, but I am sure that many will not understand it. But for me, Irina is worth all this.
"I'm starting to think you didn't miss me." she fake cries before heading to the living room and throwing herself on my couch.
I cringe as I remember what I did just half an hour ago on the exact spot she's sitting on and hope that not even a drop landed on the velvety material. I'm sure she would know immediately and that would be a nightmare.
