Chapter Thirteen | naive
"There's always peace before the storm."
Third Omniscient Point Of View

"Mama..."
Mama..."
She stood in the woods, draped in just her nightgown. The wind blew furiously and leaves moved in a circling pattern. Circling around her. She went on her knees and shook her head. She recognised the voice.
"Mama, whyyyy..."
She bit her lip, tears streaming down her face.
"Mama, whyyyy..."
She sobbed, covering her ears, trying to ignore him. It didn't help. It sounded like he was whispering right next to her ears, through them.
"Mama, I begged you..."
"I'm sorry, Lethu..." she cried out. Her heart throbbed in pain. He was hurting her. Suddenly, the wind stopped. The leaves fell down around her. She removed her hands from her ears, and opened her eyes. She gasped as she saw Lethokuhle standing in front of her.
"Mama..." his voice was shaky, like he was on the verge of crying. Like how he always sounded whenever she spoke to him. Filled with uncertainty and fear. Walking on eggshells with the woman he'd known as a monster since he was born.
"I'm sorry I could never make you happy..." he whispered, his voice trembling.
"I'm sorry, Lethu. I didn't mean to!" She screamed in terror.
He looked horrible. His skin was peeling off and it look painful. Pink flesh was underneath the pealing skin. It was rotten and some of it burnt. The closer he got, the more the smell of rotten and burnt flesh got stronger. There were maggots all over his body. It was a horrifying sight.
Amukelani's eyes shot open, perspiration on her face, flowing down the sides in rivulets. Her chest heaved as she let out heavy frightened breaths. Her heart furiously pounded against her chest. She turned and saw Trevor by her side. Grateful to have him by her side, she got closer to him and snuggled to his body.
Trevor was really helpful lately. His behaviour had changed completely after Lethu's death. He stayed at home more. He was kinder and was a lot more appreciative towards her. It was obvious she was falling in love with her captor but she didn't care. She was finally going to experience something good with the only man she's known and that's better than falling in love with the unknown.
She smiled and went back to sleep, trying to forget the nightmare she just had. Lethu was gone and things were starting to look up. Maybe what she did was for the best. She saved Lethu from having the same fate as hers or maybe becoming someone's nightmare.
. . .
What more could a girl ask for? Amukelani thought to herself as she fried the piece of bacon in the pan. Trevor was in the shower so she decided that she was going to slip out and make him breakfast. She heard his footsteps behind her and smiled to herself. She turned and was met with his unemotional face. His face was void of any giveaway emotions.
She furrowed her eyebrows. "Baby? What's wrong? Is.. is everything okay?" She tried touching him but he moved away from her, stepping back. "Trevor..." she whispered, her gut telling her something was amiss.
