Robyn limped into the room, wincing as she did so. Clint had set and splinted her leg, and Tony had done something to speed up the healing process, but she knew what everyone was thinking.I got away with a broken leg, and yet one of our team mates might be dead.
She kept trying to catch Clint's eye, but he seemed to be intentionally avoiding her gaze. Anyway, she was too cut up with worry for Natasha, and Bucky and Steve, who had not yet returned, to worry about that.
"This is sealed tight."
"We need to access the program, break it down from the inside."
"Any chance Natasha might leave you a message, outside the internet, old school style, spy stuff?"
"Yeah, yeah! I'll find her." Clint rushed down the stairs, looking away from Robyn as he did so.
She stared at where he'd disappeared for second.
Great. Now one team member is missing, one hates me, one probably won't talk to me about anything but work anymore, and one is offline. Where does that leave me? With the caffeine high genius, and the Hulk. Lovely.
And then Tony's words snapped her back to reality.
"Yeah about that..."
"No!"
"You have to trust me!"
"Tony."
They both spun around to see Robyn watching them both.
"Robyn... Bryn, I.."
"Just don't. Look where we are now. This is what happened last time. Just think for once, use that brain. What good will this cause us?"
"A lot."
And Tony turned back to convincing Bruce, but not before he heard the quiet, "That's what you said last time."
He spun back towards her.
"Then why don't you try stop me?!"
"I could. Even with this leg. Steve would. Clint would. Natasha would. But I can't be bothered anymore Zseni. I just can't do this. Go ahead. Do what you want. I'm tired of trying to stop other people from making mistakes then cleaning up after them. Go ahead."
Tony stared at her for a long time, an expression of almost heartbreak on his face.
"Never thought you'd be the first to give up on me."
Robyn just went back to treating the bruises on her hip.
"Ultron didn't go after Jarvis because he was angry, he went after him because he was scared of what he can do!"
The glow of J.A.R.V.I.S lit up Robyn's face, she looked up, staring at the fixed A.I.
"So J.A.R.V.I.S went underground, scattered, dumped his memories. But not his protocols. He didn't even know he was in there until I pieced him together."
"So... you want me, to help you, put J.A.R.V.I.S into this thing?"
"Noo! Of course not, I want to help you put Jarvis in this thing!"
Robyn gave a snort, and Tony glanced over to her, his eyes pleading. She looked over to Bruce, who was watching the two of them warily.
"Okay. Bruce, this could work. Before, you were building something from scratch, almost a child. But JA.R.V.I.S knows us. And that stone... this could actually work."
She pulled herself up, and shuffled over to them.
"We're out of my field here, you know biromechanics better than anyone!" Tony begged Bruce.
"You're just assuming that J.A.R.V.I.S' operational matrix can beat Ultrons?!"
"J.A.R.V.I.S has been beating him from the inside, without knowing it! This is the opportunity, we can creat Ultrons perfect self, without the homicidal glitches he thinks are his winning personality! We have to!"
"I believe it's worth a go." The A.I put in.
Bruce looked beseechingly at Robyn, hoping for at least one vote in his favor.
"Sorry," she replied. "If J.A.R.V.I.S agrees, I'm with them. This actually could work."
"I... I'm caught in a loop, I'm caught in a time loop, this is exactly where it all went wrong!"
"I know, I know what everyone's gonna say, but they're already saying it! We're mad scientists, we're monsters, buddy! We gotta own it. Make a stand."
Robyn watched Bruce, studying his every move.
He gave a final pleading strike at Robyn. "I thought you were supposed to be the sane one here?!"
She grinned back. "What on earth gave you that idea?!"
"It's not a loop. It's the end of the line."
Bruce sighed.
"Damn you both."
Robyn started down the stairs.
"Hey, Hey, Where are you going?" Tony called after her.
"Clint might need help. I know a few older transmitting things."
She limped into the corridor, the cast of her leg hindering her, and slipped in behind Clint, who sat, studying the computers. He turned as he felt her presence.
"What the hell are you doing in here?!"
"I can help."
"You've done enough!!"
Robyn sank into the chair beside him. "You can't fix something if you don't try."
He looked over at her, finally.
"It's your fault that Nat is.. might.."
"I know. I know... just, please. Let me try fix this."
"How are you going to do that?"
"I have destroyed hundreds of lives in one day, Clint. I've watched bombs being fired at monsters and angels alike. I've brought people who believed they were gods down to their knees. And I did it out of spite. Spite for this world, for the people who made me suffer, for the people who made Natasha, Bucky, the Maximoffs suffer. This earth is littered With the ruins of empires who thought they were eternal. You guys think you've seen hell. Hell is when I decide to do something not out of spite, but because I'm sick of letting other people hurt my friends. I think I can help with a radio transmitter."
Clint stared at her for a long time. He looks down at his hands then back at her, then gave a a face splitting grin.
"I.. um. Don't have my hearing aids in. You spoke too fast for me to lip read."
Robyn started at him for a split second before bursting into laughter, holding herself up, before signing to Clint:
"Never mind. Probably best you don't here what I said anyway."
He jerked his head to signify her to come help, and she tucked herself in next to him.
As they worked he looked over at her.
"Where did you learn ASL?"
She gave another grin, glad he was technically talking to her again.
"Believe it or not, we used it on the streets. There was one deaf kid, and she taught us. We used it as our own language. It's where I learned French as well." She signed back.
"Well thank god it's not only Nat that I can talk to now."
He froze up slightly as he spelled Nats name, and they both refocused on the screens.
"Tell me if you hear anything."
A few minutes later Robyn raised the headset to her ear, Her face paling at the faint beeping coming through.
"YES, YES YES!!" She jumped up, and her and Clint flung themselves into tracing the signal.
Thank god
They'd found her
