"Déjà Vu"

Third Person POV

"Promise that when we get to high school we'll still be friends?" A young girl held out her pinky, waiting for a response. "I promise." The boy across from her stuck his out as well. The two kids intertwine their pinky fingers, sealing their promise. "We'll be friends until we're gray." The boy says, making the girl smile. "I'll hold you to that." She replies, looking down at their pinkies.

That was the promise they made when they were only in sixth grade. The two had known each other since they were fourth graders, always having a special bond from the very first day they met. Levi was the kid everyone seemed to ignore and left out of games during recess. Meanwhile, (f/n) was the kid who always reached out and wanted to include him, feeling bad that no one wanted to be friends with the new kid. Even though he was hard to get at first, he truly appreciated her effort, grateful for her kindness. There was no denying that they would be friends for a long time.

Once the kids reached high school and eventually got busy with their own lives and after school activities, they tried experimenting in the whole dating situation. With other people. Neither one of them would ever admit to having feelings for the other, they were best friends over anything else. Levi eventually landed himself a girlfriend at the end of sophomore year. A cute girl named Petra, captain of the cheer squad for their school. (F/n) had never really spent much time with Petra besides meeting her twice in the hallway, introduced by Levi. Other than that, (f/n)'s been busy doing (after school activity/sport), never having time to hang out with Levi and his girlfriend. That and being the third wheel didn't appeal to her.

Little did Levi know, was that (f/n) did eventually develop feelings for him in the middle of junior year. When prom came around, she knew she wouldn't go because of her lack of a date. Had Levi been single, she would have asked him, as a friend. Levi did, however, take Petra to prom, for her favor, wishing (f/n) could have found someone to bring as a double date. As senior year rolled in, (f/n) had become more distant, busy filling out applications to get into a university. School was her top priority and she hardly saw Levi during the last year and a half. Anytime Levi would text her and ask to hang out, her response was always a "sorry, I'm busy." Part of the reason for her distance were the hidden feelings she held for him. She could never live with herself if she expressed them and made him uncomfortable or cause a break up between him and Petra. It was the last thing she wanted. At the end of the day, if she still had Levi as a friend, that was all that mattered.

In Levi's world, all the days bled together. Rituals with (f/n) became rituels with Petra as she become less available. It didn't feel right, on the inside. He knew that once they graduated, they would likely never see each other again or at least not for a long time. Getting used to doing things he specifically did with (f/n) would have to become normal. However, it still felt wrong. Petra shouldn't be the one sitting across the table at his and (f/n)'s favorite diner. It shouldn't be late night phone calls with Petra and it shouldn't be constantly hanging out at Petra's house. This wasn't right. Everything he used to do with (f/n) had been replaced by Petra. This girl drove them apart. He had lost his best friend after graduation. It shouldn't have been graduation photos with Petra. It should have been (f/n).

When all three had gone off to university to start studying their passions, all communication had been lost. Levi went off to study business and (f/n) went to study (major of your choice) across the country. The last time they had saw each other was when they were at their high school graduation. They just so happened to pass each other and chat for a bit before leaving. The exchange was awkward, not as lively as it had been since fourth grade. The space was tense, no one wanted to say a word.

During college, Levi had realized his true feelings for Petra. They had planned a life together, knowing exactly how and where they would live after graduating. Levi realized he didn't love Petra the same way she loved him. He could not live with himself if he kept faking his love for her. She didn't deserve it. She did not deserve half his heart and he did not deserve to pretend every day of his life for her sake. Before graduation, he decided to end their relationship which hurt like hell for both parties, but it was for the best. They ended on good terms, both agreeing that it was not worth it to pretend and hurt each other in the long run. She reminded him too much of (f/n) and how much he missed her.

After moving back to their hometown to begin his new career with a degree, the first thing he did was visit (f/n). It had been too long since they last saw each other. During their university years, they had exchanged no more than a hundred messages in those four years. Life had simply gotten in the way of them. Now, there was nothing separating them. There were no excuses to be made to stop them from seeing each other. As Levi made it to her old home, the mature girl opened the door and a smile instantly grew on her face. "Levi, I haven't seen you in years." She spoke, taking in everything. "Where's Petra?" She then asked, looking over his shoulder. "I let her go because I couldn't stop the déjà vu."
