Brett and I are sitting in the office working as hard as we can. In a few months, the most important day of our life was to come. The NFL Draft. The perfect place for us to find the best talent from the collegiate level. We knew this was to be a make or break year for us. We either find hits or misses that would determine if our job could be saved.

Brett was on the phone and I could see she was excited about something.

"I see," she said. "Yes, that would be lovely. Okay! You got yourself a deal. Thank you for the picks. Bye!"

She hung up the phone with a smile. "Good news Scout."

"What's up?" I asked.

"I just got the Raiders to give us their first and second round picks for this year and a two firsts and two seconds for next year. So that means that we have a total of nine picks in the draft."

"Great! What did we give them?"

"I finally decided that Sawyer Gray and Trenton Coolidge were no longer of good use for us."

My mouth dropped. "You traded away our two best players from last season?"

"Hell yeah! You think I want a team with bad personalities in the locker room."

"You never go inside the locker room," I remarked with a laugh. It was a joke, but Brett didn't find it funny at all.

Truth be told, I did agree that Sawyer Gray, a defensive back and Trenton Coolidge, a running back, were problems on the team. On a team that was awful, they were our best players. Coolidge led our team in rushing yards while Gray was our top defensemen. Yet, they were very arrogant and had brash attitudes. They often clashed with teammates and coaches leading to major fines and conflicts.

It got to the point where the previous coaching staff decided to suspend them only to have them suit up for one game during halftime. That didn't sit well with Mr. Eisenhower, who had another reason to fire them. Still, the decision had been made that Gray and Coolidge had to be let go. I was just surprised we got value in return.

"That reminds me. I need a huge favor from you," Brett said.

"What's up?"

"I need you to go to El Paso this weekend. There's supposed to be a pro day for the quarterback from UTEP. I think his name was Sam Wiggins."

"The guy that finished fourth in the Heisman vote?" I knew of Sam Wiggins. He had take the Texas-El Paso Miners to a surprising Sugar Bowl appearance. If it weren't for a sore wrist on his throwing hand, Wiggins and the Miners would've defeated the Auburn Tigers. So, I was kind of surprised to see that he had declared for the draft.

"I have a very unique interest in him," Brett continued. "I think he has the intangibles of the quarterback I want for our football team. He's tough, durable, and has amongst the highest IQs in football they say. He led the nation in passing yards and touchdowns."

I nodded in agreement. A quarterback of Wiggins' caliber would've fit our roster as we were in need of one. Our current quarterback's contract was up and he had told us he would not be returning to the team. So, we were down to our backups and they weren't that talented at all. Perhaps Wiggins was what we needed.

There was just one problem.

"Most people say he would be a sixth or seventh round pick," I said. "For our team, I think we need a high quality quarterback in the first or second round.

"So?" Brett asked. "Tom Brady was taken in the sixth round at 199 and look at his career. He could be a steal for us if we draft him. Still, I need to be sure he's what we want. So, you need to be there."
