I was answering emails to a reporter for a scheduled interview for the expectations for the upcoming season when I received a call. It was from Nate English, the general manager of the Denver Broncos, who I respected. I was looking forward to facing his team because I knew Denver was a threat to becoming a strong team in the AFC in a few years. This would be a test to see where they were in the league.

"Hey," I said answering the phone.

"Brett," he replied. "I'm sorry to bother you at this time."

"No worries! What's up?"

"Well, apparently, the NFL called us about a trade that y'all were wanting to make and knowing you, I wasn't sure if you were down for it."

I stood there in silence.

"What do you mean a trade?" I hadn't thought about a trade with anyone, especially Denver.

"Well, someone within your organization proposed a trade that involved one of our defensive backs in return for your first, third, and one of your quarterbacks."

My heart sank. Someone had gone behind my back to make a trade and to get rid of one of our quarterbacks. I started to feel uneasy.

"Do you know which quarterback was put down?" I then asked.

"I believe it was Gordon Henry," was the reply. I suddenly started to seeth inside.

"I can assure you I was not made aware of this. I am pretty disgusted right now."

"I know. I just thought you should be aware because the NFL hasn't approved of it and they were wanting to see if you were okay with it."

"As much as I know you want our first and third picks, I'm sorry to say that won't happen. I'm going to let the NFL know about it immediately."

"I understand. I just figured I let you know."

"Thank you." I then hung up the phone feeling bothered. Who in the right mind would want to make a trade giving out key assets in return for some random player without my consent? I was hot and mad by now. Someone went behind my back and that was a big no for me.

I knew this had to be addressed and that I wasn't going to leave it unsaid. I called the NFL and informed them that the trade was not to happen and that I would personally tend to the issue of who called in myself. When I was done, I then called Kendra on my office phone.

"Yes Ms. Mills," she said.

"Gather everyone of my staff for an emergency meeting right away in the boardroom," I said.

"Will do."

I hung up the phone, then texted Scout to meet me in my office. He came in a few moments later.

"What's going on?" He asked me.

"Call Gordon and tell him to meet us in the boardroom."

"Are we trading him?"

"No, but we need to find out who suggested the trade. This is a clear cut violation of the protocols."

Soon, we were sitting in a boardroom. It was me, Scout, Penny and the rest of the management team. Gordon was also there and he was just as confused as to what was going on. I also felt bad for him because of all of us in the room, he was dressed in blue jeans and a t-shirt with a cap on while the rest of us were in business attire.

Everyone was quiet as we waited for the meeting to start. I didn't know how to start the meeting. Should I be angry and go on a rant? Or should I address the matter in a professional, but subtle way that would make the situation less tense? I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of what happened, but I didn't want to threaten people as well.
