Fifteen Years LaterSuper Bowl LXX, Houston, Texas
Kendra
Gordon and I were sitting in our hotel room getting ready for the annual NFL Awards, which were held the night before the Super Bowl. Since the Super Bowl was to be played in Houston, we decided we would take our kids, Gator, Penny, and Olivia to the game. We had watched previous Super Bowls before and Gordon had gone to a few since his career ended. But this was a big occasion for the family.
All of us were just minding our own business when suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
That knock scared all of us. The kids were just about frightened and ran to the corner of the room while Gordon stood there frozen.
"What is it honey?" I asked him as the door knocked again.
"I've heard of these knocks," he said. "If you hear the knock, that means..."
Before he could finish, Gordon went right to the door. He opened the door and there outside was a man in a dark suit. He stood about six-four and weighed over 250 pounds with black hair and jolly-looking face that would make Santa Clause proud. Behind the man was a person holding a camera with lights. Immediately, I started to realize what was going on.
Gordon
The second I opened the door, I knew immediately who the person was. This was the president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame I was talking too and he had just knocked on my door. He does this as a way to inform everyone that they were going to be inducted in the the hall of fame and the candidate would have a bust on the premises. When he showed his face with a cameraperson behind him, you could only imagine my emotions at the moment with what he said next.
"Hey Gordon," the jolly-faced man said. "As you know, I'm the president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. I'm here to tell you that you have had a tremendous career with all that you accomplished. A lot of your teammates and peers have spoken very highly of you as have the members in the media. That is why I am proud and honored to inform you that you have been selected as a member of this year's class for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Welcome to Canton."
"Oh my god," I said as I shook and hugged the president. "This is awesome. You have no idea what it means to me."
"You are truly deserving and you'll be honored tonight at the awards."
"Thank you." Before long, I turned back to my family.

I covered my mouth and started to cry. To hear that your husband and best friend was to be inducted among the greatest of football players gives me goosebumps today.
"Gordon," I said teery-eyed. "I'm so proud of you."
"We're going to Canton," he replied and we as a family hugged each other.
Before long, text messages and calls of congratulations from teammates, friends, and peers came to Gordon's phone. He received a lot of them that it didn't matter to me that I would have to pay a ridiculous phone bill. I was now the proud of a Super Bowl champion, MVP, and hall-of-famer.
"So Gordon," I asked him. "Who are you going to ask to present you?"
"Babe, you know I love you," Gordon replied. "But I think you and I both know who deserves to induct me."
As disappointed as I was in his answer, I could only agree with Gordon.
