𝓢UNDAY 𝓙ANUARY 𝓣ENTH

5705.

Apartment 4D.

The address of my loft in Virginia.

When I walked into the loft it felt like I was eleven years old again. Eleven years old, being sent across the country to live with a family member that I have never met before. Meeting and moving in with Aunt Mona was the most frightening adjustment of my life. I did not know what life without my mother would be like, but I made it adventurous and worthwhile.

Returning to the loft made me think about my life.  Actually, the life I did not get to have. If my mother stayed in Astalilia, then I would have grown up being a pampered princess. I would be like Seraphina. I was meant to grow up as a princess and I cannot help but wonder what my life would have been like if I grew up in Astalilia. The worst thing about imagining this potential life is I would never have met Kat. That thought is terrifying.

Thankfully, Aunt Mona did not change the locks before she left, and she did not rent out our loft to strangers. I would hate having strangers in my bedroom while I am not here.

I did a walkthrough of the loft for a few minutes when I first returned. Everything felt different about being here. Not a single human being was around every corner, not a single human being bowed at my presence. I got to ride in a cab without thinking about Ezra's repercussions and I did not have to be prim and proper.

I could finally slouch! I could walk around with no makeup on! I could curse like a truck driver at strangers who cut in line, or who bump into me while walking down the street!

My bedroom felt like it belonged to a stranger.

My bedroom has never been this clean before. I know for a fact that Aunt Mona could never leave for consecutive months without cleaning my room for me. She could never leave a speck of dust in this loft before leaving.

My plants! My plants are sitting in my room dying of thirst. They have not had water in weeks.

"I'm so sorry little guys," I whispered to my plants. I poured water on them all and attempted to speak life back into them. "Don't worry, I'm not gonna let you all die."

I cautiously looked out my fire escape to see if anyone was around.

I cannot believe I am actually going to do this.
