Henry and Gabe were in a rush to get back to Astalilia. The two of them spent the night on my bedroom floor. They woke up with a crick in their necks and I could see that they both wanted to go home right away. It could have been because finding Jackal was a top priority, or because they felt weird in normal clothes and being in the suburbs of Virginia.
I had never unpacked my bags when I returned to Virginia, because unpacking would mean that I was going to be staying in Virginia. I did not know the answer to that when I came back to the loft. There was no answer to that. Not knowing has become a second language recently.
Henry and Gabe waited in my bedroom for me to be ready, because they had the plane to Astalilia ready on standby. I wonder if Dominick gave them his private plane for their trip to America.
They took my bags to the front door, and I stayed in my bedroom for a few minutes. I locked the door behind them, because I told them I wanted to be alone.
Before leaving, I took a small handful of soil from one of my plants and climbed up the fire escape and snuck into Leo's room. He was laying on his bed napping in the middle of the afternoon. I assume that he would be working the night shift at the local bar that he works at. I jumped onto Leo's bed and continued jumping until he woke up.
"Yeah, I'm calling the police," he mumbled.
I let myself fall onto his bed on my knees when I finally saw him open his eyes.
"I need you to look after my plants for me until my aunt gets back," I said.
"Leaving again? Don't give me the bullshit that you're going to California with her again. Are you going to come back, or stay away this time?" Leo asked.
"Please, if you're my friend, you won't ask me questions about this," I whispered.
"Fine. I guess I'll just sit here and think of theories in my head all day and night," he joked.
I gently squeezed my hands together as I held the soil in my palms.
After a few seconds of squeezing my hands together with my eyes closed, I opened my eyes and lifted my right hand. A small purple balloon flower began sprouting from the soil in my palm. Leo became paralyzed watching the flower grow. He did not blink, I assume he thought that if he blinked, he would be dreaming, and this was not happening.
