is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured?

you looked at him as the monster he was, until you realized you loved him.
then those sharp claws were only for gentle caresses, those pointy horns were a crown atop his head, and his body was a temple you worshiped all day.

IT WAS GETTING HARDER AND HARDER TO DIFFERENTIATE THE DAY AND NIGHT. unlike the heavens, where you were greeted by the bright days and star filled nights, here there was only the constant net of grey smoke and the smell of ash and burnt flesh.
your only telltale was the eerie silence that night brought on when the most dangerous of the creatures set out for their hunt.
you looked out your window as that familiar stillness took over the air. wondered if you'd catch a glimpse of the monsters you'd only seen in books.
but there were none. not because they didn't exist, no. but because these predators were good at concealing themselves amongst the shadows. maybe too good.
with your eyes now fixed on the hissing flames not too far from your window, you counted your breaths. then the seconds.
two thousand one hundred. two thousand one hundred one. two thousand one hundred two. two thousand...
a knock on your door. then another.
it took you one, two, three steps to reach the dark mahogany frame and open the door.
"had a hunch you'd be awake."
"hey, kiri." you weren't sure when you went from calling him kirishima to kiri, but probably somewhere between him taking care of you and defending you.
"how are you?" he asked rather quietly with an unsure look.
"i'm well." you managed out with a forced smile that didn't reach your eyes.
kirishima gave you a look and you let out a long loud sigh "as well as i can be."
he nodded. after everything, killing the centaur and meeting your b̶o̶y̶f̶r̶i̶e̶n̶d̶ ex, he was surprised you were not having a complete mental breakdown.
"i've got something for you." he said again after a few beats of silence and reached out a hand.
there, in the middle of his palm, was that dagger bakugou had given you earlier. some time between the fights and arguments you must have dropped it.
"thank you." you said as your fingers closed around the familiar handle, the rough touch of the engravings now familiar to your skin.
"you know, he must really trust you to give this to you."
