“You slept with Gage?” Ethan asks me again, ignoring my question. My mouth goes dry, and I fight to produce words.
“No…” Relief floods his face. “Yes,” I blurt out, and watch as his eyes darken. “I don’t know…” I finally manage to spit out.
“Which is it?” He snaps, taking a step closer to as if me.
“It’s complicated.” I tell him quietly.
“It’s complicated? You slap me then leave me standing alone to go and screw your best friend. That’s not that complicated.” He tells me, bitterly. I can feel my anger beginning to rise.
“It’s convenient how you always seem to leave out the part where I walked in on you making out with another woman.”
“Yeah, well I learnt that from you.” At his words I take a step back. Slapping me would have hurt less. Involuntarily tears form in my eyes. I blink as his image blurs in front of me.
“Hey!” Rae yells from behind me. I hear her steps as she starts towards me, but they stop.
“Skylar?” I turn at the sound of Gage’s voice beside me. All it takes is one look at my face. One look at the tears in my eyes, and I’m in his arms. “What did you say to her?” He growls at Ethan.
“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to.”
“And what was your excuse last night? You told me you’d never hurt her. I thought you were different! Hell I gave her to you on a silver platter!”
“It wasn’t my fault!”
“No one forced you into another woman’s arms.” Gage and Ethan are now yelling at each other. Rae pulls me out of Gage’s arms, and safely into hers.
“No, but she didn’t have a problem jumping into your bed did she?” That’s all Ethan got to say before Gage’s fist was in his face.
“Gage!” I scream as Ethan lurches at Gage. One of my worst nightmares and it’s being played out in front of my very eyes. A small crowd forms as they watch Gage and Ethan repeatedly hit each other. “Stop!” I scream at them, trying to get them to pull apart.
“Cops!” Someone yells, and I look up to see mall security coming our way. I don’t have much time to process before someone takes me by the hand and starts running. Chaos ensues as the entire congregated crowd disperses in like fashion, everyone running in the opposite direction.
We stop running when we reach the parking lot. I’m then pulling away from the exit, and behind one of the brick pillars. I look up and instead the sea of blue I expect to see, I’m met with eyes the color of Rolling Meadows.
Oh shit.
“Skylar wait…” Ethan tells me, as soon as he realizes my intent to run.
“Ethan please… I have to find Gage and Rae.” I push myself off the pillar.
“Will you please just talk to me?” He begs.
“Right now I have nothing to say. You just got in a fight with my best friend!”
“Did you sleep with him last night?”
“Yes I did.” I watch his face fall, and I feel guilt rise up in me. “In the literal sense of the word.”
“What?” He asks snatching his head back up.
“We didn’t have sex. Gage wouldn’t.”
“So you didn’t… You just literally slept with him.”
“Yes… Gage isn’t like that.”
“Did anything else happen?”
“Maybe…” I tell him, quietly.
“You kissed him.” I feel my face involuntarily heat up as he asks the question.
“Yes…” He groans, running his hand through his hair.
“Skylar…” I almost feel the need to apologize, but then I remember he kissed someone else first.
“What? You were swapping spit with someone else. How dare you condemn me for the same?”
“I didn’t do mine willingly.”
“Yeah, it really looked like you were being attacked when you had your arms wrapped around her Ethan.”
“It wasn’t like that… Heather and I have history.”
“So do Gage and I!”
“Yes, but Heather and I…” He started, but stopped. Eyes wide he looks at me. “You love him.”
“Yes…”
“I wasn’t asking.” He barks.
“I know, but I felt the need to say something.” I bark back.
“I wish you hadn’t.” We stand now in silence, an agonizing silence.
“Ethan…” I start.
“Skylar!” I look up to see a familiar red head running my way. Rae is grinning at me ear to ear. Behind her I can see Gage wearing the same expression. “That was awe…” She stops when she sees Ethan. Her words dying on her lips, the smile fades from her face.
I don’t have to look at Gage’s face to tell his expression matches hers. I dare to look up into his baby blues. He looks down at me, and I can tell he’s pissed. It’s not like I ran out with him willingly. I try to send the message to him, but I don’t think he gets it.
“I pulled her out of there. This isn’t her fault.” I look over at Ethan as he speaks the words I was thinking. As he speaks it’s directed straight to Gage.
“I figured that much.” Gage tells him dryly.
“I know. I’m going to go now.” Ethan turns to walk away, and my heart starts beating erratically.
“Ethan wait!” He turns at my voice. That’s all I have. There is so much that I know needs to said, but no words come. They don’t have to.
“We’ll talk later Sky.” He tells me with a hint of a smile making its way onto his face. He walks over to me, takes me briefly into his arms and plants a soft kiss on my hair. “When the wounds aren’t so fresh, I promise.” He speaks the words, releases me, and then simply walks away.
Is this for forever?
The thought lasts for a moment before I look over at Gage and frown.
"What's wrong Sky?"
"You punched Ethan?!"
