The incessant ringing of my phone pulls me out of my sweet, sweet slumber. I fumble with it before finally getting it to answer.
“Hello?” I mumble unhappily.
“Where are you?” Rae shouts into the phone. I groan snatching the phone from my ear.
“I’m at home, in bed.” I answer matter of factly.
“No shit Sherlock! Why aren’t you at school?” I burrow under the covers smiling sheepishly.
“I am sick…” I lie.
“You are so lying. Why are you avoiding Ethan?” I roll my eyes, sitting up in bed. How does she know me so well?
“I’m not…” I lie again.
“Lie…”
“I am NOT!” One more time.
“Skylar Arielle Evans, you know you can NOT lie to me.” Rae says, and I cringe when she adds my middle name. “So tell me why are you avoiding Ethan?”
“Because I’m scared…” I finally mutter, falling back down onto my bed.
“Scared? What are you scared of?”
“That he’s gonna come to his senses and change his mind.”
“Sky, Ethan loves you. He’s not going to change his mind.”
“You don’t know…” I mutter pulling the covers over my head. Yes I am being stubborn.
“Stop being stubborn, Sky.” Rae says, and I narrow my eyes. Too bad she’s not here.
“Whatever… “
“Do you love Ethan Skylar?” Why is she asking me this? Isn’t this all we’ve talked about all weekend?
“Yes, you know I do.”
“That’s really nice to here. It would be better to hear it in person, though.” I sit straight up at the sound of Ethan’s voice.
“Ethan?”
“Hello Skylar, so why aren’t you here?”
“I… I…. umm…” I stutter trying to think of something to say. Nothing comes to mind though.
“Rae said you’re avoiding me.” I hear his voice fall. I can picture the look on his face, and it hurts me.
“I’m not avoiding you… I just, I was scared.”
“Scared of me? Skylar you know I won’t hurt you.”
“I know that, I’m just…” I trail off not knowing how to really finish what I want to say. “I’m scared you’ll change your mind about me.” I finish in a jumble. The other end falls silent. I pull the phone away to make sure that it’s still connected.
“Ethan?” I question.
“I’m here… I’m just. I’m trying to wrap my head around this.”
“Oh…” I mumble, fidgeting with my comforter. I fall silent becoming entranced in the patterns on my comforter.
“Skylar?” I almost jump at the sound of Ethan’s voice.
“Yes?” I ask, timidly.
“I love you.” My heart skips in my chest.
“I love you too, Ethan.”
“Then trust me when I tell you that I won’t be changing my mind any time soon.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really…” He tells me laughing. “So please stop worrying. I love you, and I want to be with you.”
