Wind blowing in my face, hair flying in the wind. The feel and sound of the tires on the dirt, the brown and green of the trees blurring as I fly by them on my bike, it’s exhilarating. Everything was going perfect. My mind was clear all my problems slowly fade away.
So yes, everything was going perfect. Then I hear Ethan calling my name. I turn and look at the man riding behind me pointing at something in front of me. I turn and look, and see a huge freaking fallen tree right in front of me. I hit the brakes the same time the bike hits the tree.
I scream as I fly across the handle bars. For one split second I am completely free and I’m flying. Then I hit the ground. Yeah, not cool. Ya’ll know that it’s not the fall that kills someone. It’s the sudden impact.
It’s a good thing that this wasn’t one of those times. I hit the ground, and I can’t scream, can’t move, hell I can’t even breathe. I lay there wheezing trying to breathe. Suddenly I completely understand the saying ‘fish out of water’.
I was laying there dying, well it felt like anyway, when I hear someone calling my name. My brain is too focused on trying to get oxygen into my body, that I can’t recognize Ethan’s voice. Or remember that he was even there.
Within moments his brilliant green eyes are in front of me. He falls down on his knees, and was all but screaming my name. The look on his face… Well it was priceless. He looks terrified. It was too much for me. I start laughing.
“Skylar, are you okay? Why are you laughing?” He asks, and all I can do is laugh harder. Stupid for someone who can’t breathe, right? Actually it helps. I was finally able to breathe.
“I’m….. Fine…. You’re…. Face...” I croak out between laughs. He looks at me confused, and then starts laughing himself. We sit there and laugh for I don’t know how long. We probably look like idiots, but I didn’t care. I laugh until tears start to fall. This only made Ethan laugh harder.
His laugh made me smile. It was electric, contagious, and sexy as hell. Was there anything about this man that wasn’t sexy? Yeah, not really… I decide to finally make the effort to stand, and yeah it was an effort.
“Damn” I say when I stand, and my brain reconnects to my body. The pain from the fall makes it self-known. My knees start to buckle a little, and I almost fall to the ground. Yeah, almost, instead I fall into Ethan.
My hands fall onto his chest. He falls back a little from my impact, and his hands wrap around my waist. He pulls me close to him, and looks down at me smiling. That smile… Sends a shiver down my spine, and makes me want to throw everything out of the window.
Forget about the fact that he’s my teacher, and that he’s way off limits. I want to, but I can’t. I lean into him, and place my forehead on his chest. I take a deep breath trying to calm down, and wrap my head around my feelings.
What I wasn’t expecting was for him to wrap his arms tight around me, and hold me to him. I should have backed up. I should have walked away, but I couldn’t. Instead I did the opposite. I move my arms up from his chest, and wrap my arms around his neck. I fight the urge to run my fingers through his hair.
