Ethan leaves, and I go in the kitchen to find, and kill, my mother. I find her bagging the cookies she made for our “wonderful” new neighbor. I am being sarcastic if you can’t tell. She is planning something I know. I can feel it in my bones. My mom is sneaky… Very sneaky, and she is always trying to play matchmaker. That thought enters my mind and… she couldn’t be… No… No…
“Mom what the hell are you doing?” She looks up at me surprised.
“Well dear I am finishing bagging these cookies, and then I’m going to help your father at the restaurant.”
“No mom that’s not what I mean. I get you inviting Ethan to dinner and all, but why did you make it so that I have to drive him?” She gives me a DUH look.
“Well I thought it would be nice you two getting to know each other. He is a very handsome young man.” I shake my head at her.
“Mom… Are you serious?”
“What? All it’s only a car ride. It’ll be a good time for ya’ll to get to know each other.” My mouth almost hits the floor.
“Mom!! You do remember me telling you he’s my teacher right? If you didn’t let me remind you he’s my teacher. It’s illegal, and besides he doesn’t like me like that. He can’t because he’s my teacher. Besides he thinks I’m dating Gage or something.”
“Well are you dating Gage?”
“What eww gross no. You know he is like my brother.”
“Alright then don’t worry about that. Ethan seems like a very nice guy.” She is giving me the look. I know she is planning something, and with my mom that is scary.
“Mom,” I sigh at her shaking my head, “He is my teacher! Teacher, okay nothing can happen even if I want it to. Which I don’t it’s not like that between us okay.”
“Yeah right Skylar, I’m your mother I know things. I know you like him, and by the way he smiles at you it’s clear he likes you too. Besides he’s only your teacher for another few months. I can’t believe he’s a teacher he looks so young. I wonder how old he is?” She wasn’t talking to me. She really wasn’t even asking a question, but I heard and I knew the answer so…
“21” I answered without even thinking about it. My mom gives me a look.
“And how do you know that?” I look down at the floor. Suddenly very interested in the different colors in our tile.
“He allowed the class to ask questions today, and that was one of the questions asked.”
“Really now so what else do you know about our handsome teacher?”
“Well… He’s single, favorite colors are blue, and grey, and he likes football, hockey, and baseball.” I tell her and she just looks at me. I can feel my cheeks warm up, and I can just imagine what she is thinking. I don’t want to know. I have to get out of here. “You know what I’m going to take a shower. Love you mom see you at the restaurant.” I tell her as I turn and all but run upstairs. I can hear my mom laughing, but I don’t care. I really hope she doesn’t try to embarrass me tonight. But knowing my mom… Yeah she probably will.
