“So what are you gonna do later Skylar?” I look over at my best friend as she asks the question.
“Well…” I say pausing for added dramatics “I’m supposed to meet Ethan at The Shack later.” I watch as Rae’s eyebrow raises.
“Oh really? How’s he feeling? I heard he left school earlier sick.”
“Oh really, he did?” I question looking away nonchalantly.
“Yeah, big coincidence right.”
“It is something must be going around.”
“Yes it must… So what did ya’ll do?”
“Talked, mostly.” I answer causing her to laugh.
“You are bad. Making him ditch. You should be ashamed.”
“Hey I didn’t make him do anything. He left on his own will. I didn’t even know until he showed up at The Shack.”
“Yeah I bet.”
“I’m being serious. He walked in while I was playing the piano.”
“What were you playing?”
“A Thousand Years.”
“So HE just happens to walk in while you’re playing a song that’s for HIM?”
“Yes?!?” I answer sheepishly. I watch as Rae’s eyes narrow slightly. “Why are you angry?” I ask, recognizing the signs immediately.
“I’m not angry.”
“You can’t lie to me.” I tell her turning the tables from our earlier conversation. She rolls her eyes looking over at me.
“I’m not angry. I’m just a little hurt.”
“Hurt? Why?” I lean up on the bed, looking over at her.
“Because, Sky, it’s already starting.”
“What’s starting? What are you talking about?”
“The pulling away, the falling apart, it’s starting already.”
“No it’s not, what are you talking about?”
“He’s going to come first, and then I’m gonna be left alone, thrown away.”
“That’s not going to happen.”
“Yes it will…” She says standing. I walk over to her.
“I won’t let that happen.” I say wrapping my arms around her.
“You let it happen with Dylan.” I retract myself at her words. “You left me Skylar. It was as if I no longer existed. You didn’t talk to me, call me, text me, nothing. I can see it starting now.”
I just stand there looking at her. I have nothing that I can say. I could deny it, but that would be a lie. I didn’t talk to her when I was with Dylan. I ignored her, I ignored everyone. That’s what I was told to do. As the memories of that time come flooding back, I feel the tears beginning to form. There are still things they don’t know. Things I haven’t told them. I fight to push the tears back, but I fail.
“Sky please don’t cry. I’m sorry that wasn’t fair.”
“Yes it was… It’s true.” I watch Rae’s face fall. “But it’s not going to happen again, Ethan’s not Dylan.”
“I know, he’s better so you’re gonna fall more for him.”
“Will you stop? I’m here now!”
