“A surprise, huh?” Ethan asks, looking at me. I can tell he’s not sure about this. I give him one of my sweetest smiles. I can see his defenses breaking.
“Yep, so please Ethan?” I ask, standing there twirling my hair and still smiling. The rest of his walls break down. He looks at me shakes his head and smiles. He turns and holds his arm out.
“Okay I give, ladies first.” I run up to him and hug him.
“Thank you, Ethan, thank you.” He hugs me back and laughs.
“You’re welcome. I don’t think you left me a choice to say no. I still don’t like the idea of you riding again this soon.”
“Well, you don’t have to worry about that. We’re walking the rest of the way.” I tell him, before turning and walking into the forest.
“Walking?”
“That’s right, now hurry up Teach or you’re gonna get left.” I tell him as I walk farther into the forest. He watches me for a moment, and I feel the chills run down my spine. Then he walks into the forest, jogging a little to catch up to me.
“Don’t call me that.” I look at him confused for a moment.
“Call you what?”
“Teach, don’t call me that.” I look at him and laugh a little.
“Okay, well why don’t you want me to call you that Mr. Knight?” I ask, and he shoots me a glare. I shrug my shoulders and give him an ‘I’m sorry’ look.
“I’m not even going to tell you about calling me Mr. Knight you know better than that.”
“I know I’m sorry I couldn’t help it. But, once again why don’t you want me to call you Teach?” I ask, giving him a sideways look while weaving through the trees.
“Well, it makes me feel old, and reminds me that I am your teacher. I try to forget that when I’m with you. Plus, I like hearing you say my name.” I stop walking for a moment and look at him, allowing his words to soak in. The sound of leaves crunching falls silent beside me, and I know that Ethan has stopped walking as well.
I take a moment to look around me, gauge my surroundings. Really, I was just giving my brain time to register and digest the words that Ethan just said. Looking around I realize that we are close, really close, to…. Well the surprise.
“Come on.” I tell Ethan grabbing him by the hand, and pulling him along with me. He doesn’t protest verbally, but I do catch him roll his eyes. When he sees me looking he smiles at me. I hate it when he does that. It makes me forget that I’m mad at him.
The trees start thinning out, but the foliage gets thicker, denser. Almost as if they are covering a secret, my secret. I start to walk forward, but I’m stopped short when Ethan doesn’t move. I turn around and look at him.
“What are you doing come on?” I tell him as I try to pull him along.
“You’re not going to take me into the woods and kill me are you? Or take me and leave me for dead, tied to a tree?” Ethan asks, and I look at him like he’s crazy before I start laughing.
“No I wouldn’t do that to you.” I tell him, walking up to him and patting him on the cheek. “You’re too cute for that. Now come on!” I tell him dragging him with me. Finally he walks with me.
“I’m coming, I’m coming sheesh.” I look back at him and laugh.
“Did you seriously just say sheesh? How old are you 5?” I ask, shaking my head.
“Hey watch it. I’m old enough to drive, vote, buy alcohol, and give you detention. Ha, beat that.” I stop walking and look back at him. My mouth drops open, and I stare at him. How is he going to threaten me with a detention when we are even at school? What the hell?
