Classes seemed to fly by today with the anxiety of being the new kid gone. However, the anxiety that came with folks whispering about the new kid being with Mason was a lot. Calculus came with a quickness and Ezra found herself face to face with a smirking Mason. "Wipe that smirk off your face." He pouted at her. "Don't you mean my cute face? You did say I was cute just the other day, girlfriend." Ezra gave him a look causing him to laugh. "You know having your mother squeal at you for becoming the boyfriend of the girl she wanted you to date all along is a fun way of finding out you are in a relationship." Ezra shook her head. "Your mother hates me." He leaned into her. "She actually really likes the girl that was one out of three freshmen admitted to the most prestigious Arts high schools in the country." Ezra groaned causing him to chuckle.
"It's not so bad being my girlfriend, I promise." Ezra leveled him with a look. "We're not in a relationship, Mase." He pouted before putting an arm around her. "But you have a nickname for me and everything. I have one for you too, little thing. There's even a ship name for us. Team Mara." Ezra couldn't help but laugh at that. It was cute. Jace walked in right as the bell rang to see Mason Dixon with his arm around his girlfriend and her laughing at something he said. He was ready to interject before watching Ezra remove Mason's arm and sit back in her chair. Her eyes met his and she smiled at him. He found his seat and stole glances at her as Mr. McCaslin taught. He could see Mason staring at her from time to time, but when their eyes met there were daggers.
The bell rang and everyone was up. "Walk you to World Literature," Mason offered with a smile that accentuated his green eyes. "No, Mason. We're not Mara and we're not going to give these gossiping fools any more fuel. You and I are just friends, you know that right?" Jace listened to their conversation and smirked. He was happy his Princess was putting that ass wipe in his place. "I know we're friends, Ezra." Mason responded. "I just think you should try and one day be open to being more." Jace wanted to punch him in the face. Ezra shook her head before heading out. Mason looked at Jace who was watching him carefully before leaving. Jace made his way to his locker before rushing to World Literature, which like yesterday found him and his brothers running into the classroom as the bell rang.
"Scotts, nice of you to join us," Ms. Gatlin smiled happily. "I hope you all are ready to present. I will be picking you at random to read off your excerpt of choice." Student after student read excerpts from international authors and Ezra was enthralled. "This will be our last reader," Ms. Gatlin spoke up. "Mason." Lucy Jane poked Ezra in the ribs at the mention of Mason's name causing her to roll her eyes. She hadn't believed Ezra when she said they weren't dating or that they were just friends. Ezra listened as Mason read an excerpt from Revolutionary Hearts by Pema Donyo. It was an international romance novel she was familiar with and was shocked that Mason had known it. The excerpt he chose was a declaration of sorts and the way the girls in the classroom swooned Ezra couldn't help but shake her head.
However, as the words became more emboldened, Ezra could see how with the rumor roaming around that students would see this as his declaration to her. It didn't help that when he stopped, he looked right at her. Ezra could feel the glares from her boyfriends and groaned inwardly. "Well done, Mr. Dixon." He smiled at the older woman before taking his seat next to Ezra. "You're doing a terrible job of getting the truth out there," Ezra whisper yelled at him. "I'm sorry, little thing. I didn't mean to stoke the flames." He had a glint in his eye that let her know that was exactly what he meant to do.
"For this week's assignment I want you to research three international authors and get a feel for their styles. I then want you to write three short excerpts and explain how it matches the researched authors styles. It's due on Friday." She smiled at them as the bell rang. "Come on, Ms. Dixon, lunch awaits." Lucy Jane smirked. "No!" Ezra said a little louder than she meant. "Mason, tell Lucy Jane here that you and I are not a thing." There were still students in the classroom and it was obvious they were listening. "Lucy Jane, Ezra and I are not a thing. We're just friends though I'm trying to make us more, but she isn't having it." Ezra scoffed at him before hitting his shoulder. "Ow! What I told her the truth." Ezra groaned at him as students watched on. "You're impossible." She said grabbing her binder and heading out with Lucy Jane on her trail.
