Ezra smiled before making her way to the microphone. She found Jansen and Celeste in the crowd and smiled. "I dedicate this song to my parents. Thank you for everything." The band began playing and Ezra blew out a breath before singing.
She sang with so much emotion that it was overwhelming. Everyone in the room, regardless of being a parent or not, were moved. Celeste let her tears pour as she heard Ezra's angelic voice sing about how she just wanted to make her proud. As she hit her high notes Jansen was in awe. He didn't know how he could thank her.
Ezra had done the impossible. She had helped in the restoration of his family and marriage. He would forever be indebted to her. As she sang the last line of the song, she found them once more in the crowd and smiled at them. Everyone was on their feet, including Mr. Dupont. Ezra smiled widely before taking a bow.
Mason walked up behind her with his hand around her waist as a stage hand setup another microphone. As the band began playing the instrumental to 'Poison and Wine' by The Civil Wars, Ezra watched Mason begin singing. They sang so well together that could not be denied. The song was emotional and filled with difficult runs and high notes that required the two people to be in sync and they were.
They told the story and had the attention of everyone in the audience especially her boyfriends. "I don't love you, but I always will..." They sang together as the song built on itself. Ezra could see Mason losing himself in the song and she followed suit. They played the role and sang with such feeling that some tears were seen in the audience.
As they hit the last few notes of the song, they shared a look that they knew was nothing but friendly, but from Jace's point of view it was filled with passion and longing. The crowd erupted in applause as Mason and Ezra bowed. Marjorie thanked everyone for coming before ending the event. Mason grabbed Ezra hand and led her down and towards the back exit. "Where are we going?" Ezra asked before seeing Mr. Dupont standing outside. "Oh wow!" Ezra whispered as they walked towards him.
"Ezra Cole," he said with a wide smile. His dark skin shone under the moonlight. "Mason...Dixon." Mason couldn't help but sigh. "I promise I nor my family is racist. My Mom is just oblivious." Mr. Dupont took a second before laughing. "That's good to know. We don't tolerate such behavior at UConn and the talent you two exuded up there on that stage is exactly what we want at the university." Ezra's eyes were wide.
"I spent some time talking with your parents and I know your grades are both great. Make sure you get your applications in on time and you shouldn't have a problem." Mr. Dupont waved them goodbye leaving the two teens stuck and in shock. As soon as they were certain he was out of range they began shouting. Ezra jumped into Mason's arms. "Is this real life?" He laughed as he spun her around.
"What the fuck is this?" Jace asked angrily. Ezra looked at his face red from rage and sighed. Mason slowly put her down but still held her. "Get your fucking hands off my girlfriend!" Jace snapped. "Jason, stop! We just got good news that I'd love to share with you if you weren't acting like a maniac!" Jace pulled Ezra to him quite roughly causing her to hiss. "Don't touch her like that," Mason spoke up. Jace laughed humorlessly. "Don't fucking tell me how to touch MY girlfriend. You think you can sing love songs to her and she'd just run into your arms?"
"Well, you're the one that found us and where exactly was she again?" Jace had snapped. He landed a swift punch on Mason's jaw. "Jace!" Ezra shrieked trying to check on Mason, but he was up and on Jace in no time. Punches were swinging left and right all while Ezra was trying to stop the madness. In retrospect, she realized she probably should've gone to get help, but she wasn't thinking.
