Chapter 5: Bless the telephone

_*_*_

With his hands slightly shaking, Kai dialed Arias number.

The footballer took one last breath, almost as nervous as he was before a match and pressed "call."

Then chickening out he hung up directly.

You can do this Kai! He thought with an eye roll. She's the last one to judge.

Again, he pressed call and again he didn't wait for longer than a few seconds to hang up again.

It's just Aria Kai! You weren't this subconscious before!

So the footballer dialed her number one last time and then threw his phone on the other side of the sofa to prevent himself from hanging up again.

It didn't take Aria more than two rings to pick up her phone.

"Arianna Webster speaking."

Kai was still warily eyeing his phone, forgetting that she was waiting for a response.

"Hello?... Hello?... I'm afraid you have to speak up, I can't hear you."

Of course she couldn't hear him. He still hasn't said a word so the boy scurried over to his phone and picked it up.

"Yeah here's Kai! It seems like the connection is quite bad here."

"Oh Kai! What a nice surprise! I didn't expect you to call, to be honest. At least not this fast."

Great! Now she thinks I'm desperate.

"And why's that?"

He heard her laugh on the other end of the line.

"I figured you probably threw the peanuts away without noticing the note."

Kai let out an relived laugh at her response.

"And what would you have done if I did?"  He held his breath, not wanting to be too forward but again Arias laugh rang through the phone.

"I would've found a way, don't you worry."

"And may I ask how?"

"Where there's a will there's a way." And they both laughed.

Kai realized how laughing came so easily to him when he was with Aria. She made it so easy to be happy around her so the footballer tried his best to keep the conversation going.

"So, what've you been up to Miss Webster?"

"I don't know Mister Havertz, just cleaning up my house after some drunk crashed here last night."

He could practically hear Arias smile through the phone and chuckled.

"What about you?"

Kai felt cornered with the question as he had spend the last hour or so reading press on Aria.

"Nothing much, really. Just cleaning myself up a little."

Aria hummed on the other end of the line to show that she had heard him but didn't dig deeper, which Kai was thankful for

They say in silence for a good minute, neither one really knowing what to say.

"What are you gonna do with the rest of the evening?" Aria finally asked.

"I don't really know yet."

"If you're going to a bar, tell me beforehand so I can tag along to keep an eye one you."

The footballer let out another laugh which she joined.

"I am never gonna hear the end of it, am I?"

"Never."

The two of them had talked the whole evening, into the night.

They had found out a great deal about each other, but Kai tried to keep family talk to a minimum as it would've been a complete conversation bummer.

And just like Kai was avoiding the topic about their families, Aria was hesitant about asking him about the whole "love isn't real" thing as she noticed this morning that it was a topic he didn't want to talk about.

It was 10:30 pm and the actress noticed that they had been talking for five hours straight.

She realized how her eyes dropped more and stayed closed longer, showing how tired she had gotten.

On the other end of the line Aria heard Kai's voice slow down and deepen, laced with tiredness.

The footballer had audibly relaxed during their conversation.

He heard another badly suppressed yawn from Aria and chuckled tiredly, knowing that he was no better.

Kai struggled forming correct sentences and his mind was clouded from the lack of sleep.

"I hate to be that person, but I am really, really tired. Let's call it a wrap before I fall asleep on the phone." Aria said with a silent, half sleep laced voice.

Kai hummed in agreement, incapable of giving her a proper response.

"I need to know one last thing thought."

The footballer hummed again to signal that he had heard her.

The lack of sleep made Arias tongue loosen.

"Did you call me three times today but hung up the first two?"

Anxiously she awaited his answer.

Was I to forward?

But he too didn't have the energy to find an excuse. Or maybe his tired brain didn't recognize the question properly as he gave the most directly truthful answer of the evening.

"Absolutely I did."

Aria giggled lightly. She didn't know at what point of the conversation she had closed her eyes because keeping them open took up too much energy.

"I'm glad you did."

"Me too."

There was a long silence.

"Aria?" Kai whispered eventually. But ultimately didn't get a response.

"Are you still awake?" But again he was greeted with silence.

He chuckled lightly as he noticed Aria must've fallen asleep.

"Good Night Arianna Webster. Sweet dreams." The footballer whispered into the phone.

Kai Havertz wanted to hang up. He really did but as soon as the words had left his mouth he let, in a moment of weakness, the tiredness consume him.

And he too was out like a light.

The call ended itself at some point in the night when their phones ran out of battery.

But that was how Aria Webster and Kai Havertz both fell asleep on a call together, light smiles prominent on their features.
